Rush: Permanent Waves
Rush is a Marmite band with little room of sitting on the fence. In the first view years the music is dominated by Neil love of Ann Rynd and often doing 10 min plus numbers. Of course you need to add Neil drumming and Geddy unique vocal style.
Permanent Waves see a change in direction to a more commercial shorter style. Neil lyrics have matured too. Nearly everyone will have heard Spirit of Radio that managed to get into the USA and UK charts.
Rush albums even divide fans but this I can always come back to and enjoy

Thanks, John. I'm a bit Marmite about Rush and don't know their albums well, this one included.
I shall listen tonight.

I am expecting a lot of 1s and 2s but this is probably the easiest album to get into

Not my favourite Rush album but still a classic. Not listened for quite a while so will revisit.

Yes Geddy can do that people but he is a bit more reserved on this

It's not terrible and I like the way the drums are recorded and prominent. Jacob's Ladder is far more interesting because it has a good opening sequence and isn't as relentless. Different Strings, too. In these two tracks, they show their strength. Much of the rest sounds like rather 'ordinary' heavy rock without much to remember them by. The vocal is distinctive but not quite my thing. 3/5

I remember being really disappointed on hearing this for the first time. I thought I might think differently of it when I played it today, but no, not really. I always quite liked Jacobs Ladder and Spirit of Radio was another highlight but I just find the rest of it completely unremarkable. Conversely, everything they did prior to this was outstanding. I went to see them when they toured this album and the three tours after that, but they were never the same again after this release. 3.5

I like a lot of Rush stuff, but this ome... meh. It's not a bad album, it's just a bit Rush-by-numbers to my ears. It's got to be said, they're three really good musicians, but they come off a bit too glossy, all style and no soul. 3/5

Not enough for me

I love it from start to finish. Peerless musicianship. Different Strings was the song I enjoyed revisiting most, such a shame the guitar solo seems cut short at the end.
The album isn't really long enough at just 35 mins, I want more but I've enjoyed listening to this again, thanks John.
4.5/5 for Rush but an easy 5/5 compared to most other albums.

Never been able to get into Rush but after watching the excellent documentary on Netflix I gave them an extended trial using Tidal , A Farewell to Kings is my favourite album with 2112 and Moving pictures 2nd and 3rd . I can't remember Permanent Waves , I'll give it a few plays when BT sort my newly connected Full Fibre out , not worked at all since fitting 2 weeks ago .

It is about 2 years since I listened to this album and it is still a firm favourite of mine, I also have "A Farewell to Kings " and 2112. I actually saw the Permanent Airwaves tour on JUNE 1, 1980 SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND SOUTHAMPTON GAUMONT and it was superb. Their set list was 2112 Freewill By-Tor And The Snow Dog Xanadu The Spirit Of Radio Natural Science A Passage To Bangkok The Trees Cygnus X-1: Book I: The Voyage Cygnus X-1: Book II: Hemispheres Closer To The Heart Beneath, Between And Behind Jacob’s Ladder Working Man Finding My Way Anthem Bastille Day In The Mood Drum Solo
So it covered all the best track from the albums I have and a few others.
IMO Permanent Waves is a great album, with a great mix of songs, maybe not as epic as say 2112, but still encapsulating the core of Rush, it's a 4/5 from me.
