Glass - Violin Concerto No.1
Philip Glass was commissioned to write this work by the American Composers Orchestra and the Concerto (now called No.1 as there is a 2nd) was premiered in 1987. It doesn't sound like any other VC I know but, if you know Glass's sound-world, you will recognise his style immediately. Incorporating his infinite looping style morphing slowly as it proceeds, if you love his other works you will love this one. I'm led to believe it's as hard to play as any other VC, but I'll have to cede to experts in this area. Having seen a live performance, it certainly didn't look easy and keeps the soloist busy for long stretches of time. More importantly, it sounds utterly compelling and wonderful. No other VC keeps me as rapt as this one where time seems to pass very quickly and it leaves me wanting more. For me, this is a masterpiece. I have chosen the McDuffie performance as it's the first one I heard and the one I go back to a lot. open.qobuz.com/track/5383702I couldn't find the McDuffie on YouTube so here's Yvonne Lam sounding very fine indeed.

I have this by Kremer/Weiner Phil/von Dohnányi on DG, so that's the version I will be listening to.

I've always struggled with Glass but I will manfully give this a go ...

I have this by Kremer/Weiner Phil/von Dohnányi on DG, so that's the version I will be listening to. The Kremer is also very good and I play it sometimes for variation.

Let's get the score out of the way first, 5/ 5. Stained Glass. I like a great many of Glass's compositions, and this is one of them. Now, on with the "moans". It's not a violin concerto, or at least it's a violin concerto in name only. It echoes the structure of a traditional violin concerto, but that's more by accident than by design as it started life being written with five movements. Added to this, the violin part itself is a lot more motif than melody. The violin blends with rather than leads the (excellent) orchestration, or at least it does to my ears. I listened to the McDuffie version too (albeit on the computer system) to see if I was being misled by the mix on the Kremer, but no, the violin remained a part of, rather than the focus of, the piece. It's still a 5/ 5 though. It's just not a violin concerto.

I am not to fussed if it is a concerto or not dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/concertoWhat it is a fine recording with some beautiful music I like how a theme is explored and built upon A 5 from me. My favourite violin concerto (sorry could not help myself) No. Far too many brilliant violin concerto but it is certainly engaging

I like Glass and have a couple of his works on vinyl. I rather enjoyed this "Concerto", his style was immediately recognisable, I think in the first part there was a reprtitif motif that reminded of, dare I say it Vivaldi, interesting. So its Stained Glass from me.

I don't entirely disagree with Paul, but I'm less concerned with its definition than with the music that encompasses all that I like about Glass's compositions and style. I'm glad it's resonating with some of you, too. If you want further listening, try Prophecies from the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack.

Nope, not for me - I found it as engaging as an hour of root canal treatment with the dentist from Marathon Man.
Credit to Mr Glass for finding just one musical motif and sticking to it for an entire 'concerto' ... I won't dwell on this as I don't want to get stuck in a loop myself, having been into this on several previous occasions.
There is no 0/5 so I will begrudgingly give it a 1 and send an invoice to Martin for the therapy I will need as a result of intense aural trauma. I thank you.

One of the comments in the very glowing set for the YouTube performance above sums it up...
I think 'transporting' is a good way of describing his music for me.
