Having got the Krell amp, and the fact that their is definitely better detail and resolution, I decided to have a play with the various speaker cables I have.
Firstly I have a pair of Chord Epic's 5m long(cannot have shorter due to the room), these sound good on their own using the Wilson Benesch supplied speaker jumpers, but from below have determined that are not great for the mids/highs.
I next tried the above but bi-wired with a pair of Monitor Power 4mm sq silver multi strand go to the Mid/High, these are no longer made but are a reasonably high quality cable from 20+ years ago. This combination gave a clear top end. I swapped them round and now the bass was tighter but had lost some extension, which I sort of expected. The top end was not quite as good.
I dug out some very straight forward 3mm diameter copper multi strand speaker cable, similar to standard QED stuff. I hooked this up to the top end and the Chords back to the bottom end, this gave a nice top with detailed mid and high end and the bass was back as before. So far this was the best combo, surprisingly.
Finally I bi-wired Top and Bottom end using purely the Monitor Power cables, a reasonable overall presentation, but the bass seemed slightly dulled(as before when on the bass).
So the above got me thinking and after a bit of reading I found out that Krell and several others recommend as low resistance as possible with the speaker cables, and some recommend solid copper for the high/mid side and multi strand for the low end if bi-wiring. Personally I am not really and advocate of bi-wiring, and if doing so then I think this requires careful matching, which could be an expensive exercise, personally I think good cable with the same for the speaker jumpers if the better option.
Now I do know that some consider cables and their purported differences to be smoke and mirrors, and to some extent I find vastly expensive cables from certain manufacturers to be very hard to justify, especially when it is not back up with any scientific measurement data. However I do accept that cables do can and do affect the tone and presentation of a system. So with this in mind I would like to hear a few views/recommendations. I am primarily looking for a neutral/transparent cable that is not going to colour the output from the amp, I hope that make sense.
I am considering some QED Silver Spirals with the same for jumpers on the the speaker, or possibly a pair of Ecosse Reference MS2.15, both highly thought of cables and at a similar price point. A friend has a pair of QED Spiral and in his system they seem to be very good.
Loo forward to hearing for some of you.
