Black Sabbath - love the older albums. Metallica - no. Well that’s probably why you don’t like Tool

I've heard bits of Tool. I like their use of odd time signatures and being a bit more experimental like other bands like Meshuggah but it is difficult to imagine that their albums are going to become timeless as they are quite challenging listening, same issues are found with jazz albums.
A list I've grabbed off a mainstream website has listed the following albums from the past 10 years here are some choice picks within the last 5 years:
- The Avalanches, “Wildflower” (2016) - Beyonce “Lemonade” (2016) - Taylor Swift, “1989” (2014) - Billie Eilish, “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” (2019) (Interesting to see where this career will go because I've found her tracks surprisingly dull considering the hype surrounding her) - The New Pornographers, “Whiteout Conditions” (2017) - St. Vincent, “Masseducation” (2017) (If only Strange Mercy could make the last 5 years, great album) - Leonard Cohen, “You Want It Darker” (2016)
I find Taylor Swift an interesting one as I think her songs are popular but they are not particularly special. She's more of a brand than anything but does very well at selling it.
Interested to hear thoughts on these picks.

I suppose Taylor Swift has done some good stuff but has sold out IMO and sacrificed musical integrity for bucks. Billie Ellish I cannot stand or other artists like her! The others I will look into

I find Taylor Swift much more talented and less 'manufactured' than the majority of her peers. Nothing sell out about her last two albums, quite the opposite imo to release two highly introspective and downbeat albums. 'folklore' is particularly good.

Well said Jules, anyone who thinks Taylor Swift is 'only in it for the money' knows absolutely nothing about Taylor or what she does for other musicians, upcoming artists and music in general. Yes she generates massive income, but in those immortal words, if you follow the money, you may be very surprised to learn where it goes. I rarely listen to her music and wouldn't call myself a fan, but I have a lot of respect for her, not just her artistic talent, but also her values. Her last two offerings most definitely don't fit many people's often misconstrued and misunderstood idea of who Taylor Swift actually is.

Remember when bands like The Stranglers and Motorhead (yes, really) were all lumped together as "punk rock"? I think that's probably what's happened to Taylor Swift and "Pop" to oversimplify. She's a singer/songwriter and should be judged on that. Again, I'm not really a fan, but it seems she's being too easily dismissed by people who haven't actually heard her music, just a dodgy description of her style.

As ChrisB would point out one of the issues of classifying music into genres.

I can think of a few jazz albums that have almost timeless quality. However popular is going to be a stretch.

I'm not worried about her (Billie Eilish) "authenticity," just her music. I listened to it on Spotify, and it's bloody boring. The low end may do amazing things to bigger speakers than mine, but I could find no redeeming featrures in it whatsoever.

But that's exactly the point Paul, she is just hype.

Good song, interesting voice, well sung imo. She clearly has talent, just generally chooses not to show it in her usual material. Not that I know anything about it.

I would agree. Eilish is a massive hype job. Her bond theme missed the mark by a few thousand miles too.
I am going to have to do a bit more digging into Taylor Swift as I was under the impression that her music was produced i.e. written for her. I know she started out as a "country and western" singer with a pop vibe and since then has become this monster of pop. The number of albums she has is astonishing.
I would recommend St.Vincent from that list as Annie Clarke has given that band some Talking Heads and wacky electronic vibes. I went to see her live and it was a bit of a boring show though. I have to say. Minimal energy on stage. Great guitarist though. Strange Mercy would be my album of choice.

I wouldn't deny she has talent but this is not a worthy bond theme. Think of the competition she has in this arena! Goldeneye, nobody does it better, Skyfall to name a few.
