First one is done. The timber was pressure treated (that doesn't necessarily mean much these days), that I then repeatedly soaked in clear Sikagard 5 Star.. for good measure. This permitted painting over. We then used Sadolins exterior timber breathable paint, as used in the beach huts on the coast. It will be interesting to see how long they last. 45mm thick timber, drainage holes and composite feet to lift the timber off the deck. The timber was free. Stainless screws and bolts, treatment and paint was not. Final stage is lining with one piece thick polythene lining (left over from polytunnel cover). I've come up with a clever (I thick so anyway) method of getting excess soil water to drain through 5 holes in the lining but not soaking into the base. They would have cost around £6-700 each this size, Marie said.

Me doing my due diligence on spec., advice from ChrisB, confirmed by our tree surgeon, finding best price for a fixed blade Silky saw - the boss buys a *folding* Spear and Jackson without telling me. Tried it out today, just in case it was wonderful. Better than the smaller old one, had to be, but not as good as I hoped Silky Gomtaro on the way

Mine is on the way Had a not good time with the boss's Spear and Jackson folding jobbie this morning Today or tomorrow I hope to be trying out my Gomtaro and report back It's tough when you can't get power tools onto things. Makes you appreciate how hard our ancestors worked for everything. I've finished the Versailles Planters. Marie has put some others pics on Instaspam and the orders are flowing in😂 Cunningly used a PVC strip around the top that means a seal to the top edge and internal membrane liner. Water / soil can't get into the wood from the inside. I don't mind dowsing the outsides all over with would preservative and a quick repaint every couple of years.. Other news. The 4 obelisks I made for Marie's sweet peas to grow up have had their annual spruce up. Run wood preservative all over, let it dry, quick repaint. That basically how they keep Lenin maintained I understand 😂 I made them out of birch plywood (speaker left overs). The top knobs I turned from Oak. They are 5 years old now. We only have them out april to oct. This is now Part grown up last early summer Fully festooned Just made her another raised bed. That's 7 in total 🙄 One has poly tunnel too! She can never have enough raised beds!

What do you think? Arrived today. Tested against the Spear and Jackson. About 3 times quicker, better than the S&J but There are thicker branches I don't think I could do with the S&J I like it a lot. It may allow me to work on a current fallen goat willow and avoid getting the tree surgeon in

Great. Glad you like it. As I said, they are pricey but by golly, they are worth every penny. Mind your fingers though, those teeth are like needles, as I'm sure you are now aware.

I will be oh so careful Thanks for the recommendation Chris Silly question, take a stab How long will that blade last ? Reason I ask is that I might go for a longer blade next time

Easier to work/ reach. Things grow faster as they are slightly warmer. We started off without raised beds but even rotavating / improving the soil the ground there gets heavy and a bit water logged in winter. Raising the height took the latter out of the equation. Look sexier too🙂 The mini polytunnel is a game changer - I'm reliably informed

Next diy project is getting our well working again.
It's on all the scale maps of the area going back hundreds of years. It seems it might have been filled in and partially covered over by the developer when the garage was built. A borehole and pump would be fine. You can pump 22,000ltrs a day for open use I remember reading! Not even Mrs speedy can water that much😂

You're giving me ideas We're on Bagshot sand. Wonder if raised beds would help us Hehe In Bisley we were on Bagshot clay! Even more clay here! Further down the lane there was a clay works, there was a brick factory and the bricks built Georgian and Victorian Bournemouth! Clay😱
