Would it be worth using gear oil for a little more slip protection? They quote 20-50 etc. It's not like a car diff EP80/90.

I know, but its got a bevel gear so I wondered if it could use a gear oil. It's only the Mini that ever used engine oil in a gearbox.

I know, but its got a bevel gear so I wondered if it could use a gear oil. It's only the Mini that ever used engine oil in a gearbox. The way it works is a bit odd / wouldn't translate into a heavier load application, I would think! There's a central bevelled crown and pinion but the halfshafts are pressured together either side of the crown gear. Sort of fine castellated inner sides of these wheels that are on the inner ends of the halfshafts, friction grip the sides of the crown wheel. I have a Schumacher competition electric radio control car from way back. I bought it complete secondhand. It was actually built by the then Swedish national champion! It flew! Still charges and runs! The Schumacher in question turned out to be an English competition radio control car maker! Nothing to do with Michael S - he of dubious F1 race tactics.. Anyway, those cars had a Limited Slip Diff. A lightweight micro one of course. The system was unique and from an early 1900s patent, originally invented with tractors in mind.. It didn't scale, and was never used - until the competition RC car came along. I wonder if the Toro diff is similar? It's very simple, lightweight and effective, allowing different wheel speeds at low power input (by slipping) for turning, total freewheel for pushing around forwards and backwards and of course locking up for forward drive power, when giving it some beans. The LSD didn't fail, the 2 bit plastic retainer bush / oil flicker did! I digress🙂

I got the silicone gasket maker / sealant, E bike cycle to get it . I had cleaned all the old gasket silicone off. I've degreased, carefully oil filled, applied gasket silicone, transmision assembled and it's now a curing. Refit and test tomorrow.

Mower looks a bit sad for itself.

Final part of the mower repair. I'd rebuilt the transmission and oil filled it and silicone gasket sealant'd the casing together. After a cure time of 24+ hrs it was ready to refit the transmission to the mower. Fiddly'ish and as the Haynes manual always said, assembly is the reverse of disassembly 😂 I reassembled everything using copper disassembly paste. Won't rust and stick together for next time. Finished the last of it after tea and then fired the mower up to test. Pulls like a train now. Quick test Wheel spins and spits gravel now! The plastic part had probably been failing for a while as the centre retaining pin ate it's way into the bush, until it final sheared in two. I did notice a slight drop off in pulling power before the breakage on the last cut, but put it down to the belt maybe, although that is self adjusting. In seven years, I've never needed to adjust the twin blade drive! Very pleased with my £181+postage - £3.99 for gasket sealant repair saving🙂 Hopefully will last a good few years more.

With confidence, competence and the will I'd still struggle to do that .. 🙂 It's growing up with a handy, fix it father, having that mindset and interest above all. Been like it all my life. Just love making and repairing things. There a couple of good videos on YouTube about replacing the transmission, but none about stripping it down and repair. I've video'd as I went along and will put a YouTube video up to help other - give it a go, like minds. We need to repair more and throw less away, esp come the apocalypse (zombie or otherwise 😀).

Just love making and repairing things. Having a handy father certainly helps. I didn't. I knew so little I had to get someone to show me how to concrete a post 30 years ago. When I put in some outside steps 25 years ago with timber and brick, I took direction from one of those old fashioned things called a book. It worked, and stairs still functioning. Youtube is fantastic for knowledge and guidance now.

We need to repair more and throw less away, esp come the apocalypse (zombie or otherwise 😀). Totally agree Mike. I've been doing lots of clearing out the last few months. Plenty of junk having lived in the same house nearing 30 years. As much as possible, recycle, re-use. I offered some things to my next door neighbour, who ended up using them. Some things I've given away, knowing the person will repair them. i.e. I had a pair of PSB 2B speakers I'd lent to a friend. Got them back after many years, with both woofers blown. Gave them to a guy I knew would get them up and running again (and not sending them to the landfill).

Hehe, the repair and recycle was me. Used the mower today. It's flying again! I think the degradation in drive had been coming on for a while and gradually as the halfshaft location pin ate through, meaning the drive plates were harder and harder to squeeze onto the drive crown. Like new again now. Just cut Next DIY job is the car air blower comes on to whatever you set it on for about 5 minutes then defaults to speed 1 (really low) and sits there completely immoveable by controls. No different in AC on or off, Auto on or off, set speed, where it blows etc. Common fault in the air blower resistor! It is a thyristor with a little heart sink on the back. It sniffs the circulating air and regulated the blower speed, to maintain the set temperature. Located up under the dash behind the glove compartment. Fortunately we're RHD so only the glove compartment needs to be unclipped. LHD models require the pedal box out. Here is the offending part Trick is to remove the retaining screw, gently pull the unit out, then remove the 2 plugs. Can't get finger purchase to remove them otherwise. £35 delivered. On order. Once I've got the new one / confirmed working, I pull the other one apart and see what's inside. Might be able to replace resistors / thyristor etc.

I remember changing it in a BMW 530d and it looking like a hedgehog. Same symptoms, not too difficult to replace.

I felt sorry for the Toro 30" cut mower. It's not really had the under deck TLC it deserved / required over the years. Grass is really quite corrosive but American metal is fortunately thick!👍 Toro did not powder coat the metal deck - thank goodness. Powder coat, in my experience with many things; from Caterham 7 chassis, to outdoor garden items, lamps etc, is the chocolate tea pot of outdoor finishes - should never be used on anything that will be outside or suffer the slings and arrows of the great wide world atmosphere! It's fine on hi-fi I guess 😂 Once moisture gets under powdercoat it flakes worse than a 99! Retains more moister - Utterly useless! What I should have done was cleaned and touched up the underside of the deck every season😂 Anyway, after a thorough clean, wirebrush off of surface rust and good degrease, using Gunwash (that's a special thinner/cleaner for spray paint guns 👍 - not weapons😱) It's ready for painting. This is with the deck rim protector steels removed btw. I'm thinking Por-15 first. This was all the rage on the underside Caterham chassis among the lads. Sticks like the preverbial! Very good adhesion, chip and rust proofing. Not UV resistant - so must be over painted or used underside only. I used this on my Caterham chassis tubes - excellent stuff. (I know in the tin it says, paint over rust! Only an idiot would actually did that! 😂) Once the tin is open it's impossible to reseal. Good job I don't need much / have 3.. You got 6 in an expensive pack - dread to think what they cost now - 1500% inflation since then.. Then on with some nice hammerite. Have a selection.. I'll build up a decent layering of coats. Then I'll do a spot maintenance and touch up like them good ol boys of Uhmerica on them theres U-tuuube videos🙂

Powder coating is all the rage with car modding parts in the US.
It seems to me the more successful modders send parts to be electroplated.

I cut the grass today. Did the usual wash out/off. I found the Por-15 paint, whilst tough as old boots, it is a bit too matt so the grass sticks to it more than it could. After a thorough wash, key with wet and dry paper and further clean / dry, on with the Hammerite gloss. Using up what I have🙂 Bright green. Next refurb I'll get red. The grass should wash off this gloss paint better. Apart from that, the repaired transmission is performing perfectly.
