< Ezinma: How Beyoncé's violinist is tearing up the classical rulebook > I think this young lady is worth a thread of her own as this is classical crossover of interest. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-57120365.amp"She also hopes it'll open up the classical world to black musicians - who still make up only 1.8% of orchestral musicians in the US." If these promos are a start in that regard then I'm all for it! The Bach has a very liberal layer of cheeeze added to it and the video is kind of hip-hop lite in style but I can see exactly why they have done it that way to appeal to the widest audience. Musically, the fusion in the Beethoven is much more successful for me, I actually rather like it! But my personal reaction to the quality of the music is somewhat missing the point - it would be most interesting to see how these do and whether they do start to engage a new audience. Your thoughts please gentlemen.

Truly dreadful I thought. Musically uninteresting and the videos I found just irrittating and poorly executed (regards the dubbing etc).

I enjoyed those, especially the Beethoven - I thought that was really quite musically special.
Yay, good luck to her!

Pete's mentioned a point I was giong to comment on, so I'll get to it first: It was really badly dubbed, to the extent it looked amateurish, which I'm sure is not the image they want to project. My impression was that there was little or no budget available so so they got all of the cheapest things they could and threw them at a video, when a simple video with better production values would probably have served her better.
Secondly, both pieces are actually better without the visuals, especially the Bach. Apart from the silly introduction it was, as you say, "cheesy," but pleasant enough. Lose those dancers though, please.
The Beethoven... well... too many bloody notes that Beethoven DIDN'T write, I'd say, and he didn't write them for a very good reason, they don't belong there. Not awful, but the next best thing, and this is coming from someone who quite likes a bit of Vanessa Mae, although not what she does with Beethoven's 5th either, that really is unlistenable.
I'll stick to Black Violin, and the lovely, bouncy little Lindsey Stirling for my Hip Hop/Trip Hop/Dubstep violin.

As I've said countless times before, I don't need visuals to go with the music. Judging those two videos purely on the interpretation, they were a poorly executed kind of crossover that I simply didn't enjoy listening to.

I don't think that you are the target audience, folks!

Indeed.
I’m looking at it from a slightly different perspective.
In terms of reaching a young target audience / demographic, promos are essential - these aren’t special but they do use a visual language that will be easily recognized by that audience. Same for the construction of the music.
It’s more than possible that some kids might be inspired to pick up a violin as a result of seeing someone they can relate to and if this might serve as a spring-board to the ‘good stuff’ that would be awesome.

Plays well. Not a lot going on and way better listening without the video Falling between various stools

I don't think that you are the target audience, folks! I don't think so either (dear Lord, I truly hope we're not ) but Jules did ask for opinions.

Agreed, we're not the target for this. If it encourages an appreciation of classical music, then good. But not on my system!

Whilst not for me I can see that this could be a introduction into classical music to a audience it has never had
