That wasn't so much fun. Everything off, including phones. Left off for half an hour or so With Wifi off. Cable connection only. One cable now works. Speedtest 15Mb download. None of the others, at least two or three of which used to work Back to the one cable for a final check - no that doesn't work either now Wifi working. Speedtest 6Mb download I could see that a couple of cables wouldn't work but not all of them Mike if I understand correctly what your saying, that really sounds like the ADSL router went down, which it should not unless powered off. Then from what you say after it rebooted itself the connected Ethernet cable don’t work. If my understanding is correct then it sounds as if the ADSL router is having hardware issues and you need to get another one from your broadband provider. Hoping it is the router and they can replace it. However September is pretty close and maybe I bite the bullet and try out a Three Mobile with a view to swapping over to that

The Tivos were connecting to download quite well recently so I plugged them in with a cable that didn't work
Tivo connected successfully today. Takes about a minute
Next up is to try the boss's laptop with a cable direct into the router

Ask for a replacement.

...and what does the router say? You need to be logged into the interface to see what is going on. How do I log in if wifi is off and the cable doesn't work ? Use the one good cable. If that doesn't work, Adrian is right. The router is toast.

The latest Three mobile broadband deal looks to have gone down £19 a month.
Plusnet will do well to beat that

We're still very pleased with Three, but I thought your signal strength is not good enough?

I've been dissapointed with Plusnet's lack of help over my mum's WiFi. She'll be going elsewhere.

Zen have never failed to impress, but it does depend on what your local exchange / cabinet can deliver. If nothing else, their technical support is superb.

Openreach are the limiting factor
Best I can hope for is 18Mb download, currently on 15 on a good day 1Mb upload
Next door has Three mobile, which I suggested and has 60Mb down and 30Mb up. Installed for a couple of months and hasn't missed a beat (yet)
My guess is we will eventually all go mobile

I assume you are not using fixed IP addresses in your home setup. If that is correct then check that your wired connection settings in the PC is using DHCP. If not, then turn it on and then turn WiFi off for a moment and try the cable connection again.

Indeed, check that the IPv4 settings for cable connection are completely standard - no fixed IP, no proxy.
DHCP = auto configuration in the laptop.

In case it seems I am not grateful for help...
Tried and got nowhere with this even with a YouTube guide Another go later
BTW my laptop connected fine via cable before so the settings were changed by something other than me

Round and round
Seems I have auto IP addresses looking at/from this laptop. So why does the boss's connect and mine not.
Can't see DHCP mentioned specifically anywhere and wary of going in and breaking things
Could it be as simple as : Turn router and laptop off and on again ?
This was an intermittent fault to start with BTW
