If in doubt, buy from the shop and get support from them. You generally get a better service.

The Woking shop insists they don't do support If I do this again I'd either go online or drive to Basingstoke !

Interesting. I was told online to take the modem to local store for support. I may be wasting my time then. I'll try it once if required and that's it. Given what I have read on Three Community boards I'm not going to phone them again or do a web chat - hours of your life wasted for nothing ... It's looking very unlikely I will keep it as it can't hold onto the 5g signal with any reliability. That wouldn't be so much of an issue if the 4g had sensible speeds but it just crawls ...

Well the 5g performance has been massively better today and after short drops to 4g it switched back to 5g without me needing to reset the router. Needless to say I'm not opening the champagne just yet!!

Does the coverage map suggest you're marginal for 5G, Jules?

Same happened to me with sky. Switched to Vodafone. Great deal, better speeds and router.. Hi Steve, could you tell me how you are getting on with Vodafone? Is it as reliable as Sky and fit for streaming TV? They are offering a very good deal at present with similar speed to Sky.

Update on 5g on Three.
Packed it all away for return but called local store to see if I can do it there. Unfortunately not, but the dude there was super friendly and helpful, suggesting to try the router in different positions away from the window as well. Nothing to lose, I will have one last shot at it tomorrow.

Interesting! Conflicting advice as ever ... Well I will find out tomorrow. I'll happily trade some of its top speed for reliability.

Completely trouble free. Just works 80M down, 18M up. Stream TV lots. Two TVs and high Res music no problem. They only put the price up a little bit / sensibly too.

"Your router doesn’t need a scenic view, so there’s no reason to have it next to your window. If your router is placed next to a window, a lot of the signal will escape outside and go to waste – plus you’ll miss out on that hyperfast broadband. The best position for your broadband router is somewhere central, where the signal can’t escape to areas that you’re not using wifi."
What a lot of heaving merde. They are conflating 5G with wi-fi. With advice like that, I'd pass.
You put the router where the 5G signal is best. Wi-Fi hardly matters when many (most?) people disable it and use a proper mesh.

They only put the price up a little bit / sensibly too. Thanks Steve, sounds very promising. The Mrs has decided she wants to keep the landline after all so we will give Vodafone a try. Voda went Voice Over IP for us a month or 2 ago. We don't use the landline. Not even plugged in but they sent a dongle to plug into the router if we wanted to. Of yes I must mention. For some reason some ISPs did not see our house as higher speed broadband capable! When we moved in 8 years ago now, EE did higher speeds, and I got a really good deal with them then. They seemed to run out of bandwidth every evening around prime dinner time. Complained and they fixed that. Then they wanted to put their price up a lot! 2 years on. Sky were offering good deals so event with them. They also could see our house as higher speed capable. Also had the evening time slow down, complained, fixed! Then they wanted to hike so I searched around. Voda and Plusnet came back on the internet check that we could not have higher speed! I called Voda, got through quickly. Explained the situation and they were able to correct their automatic assessment. Within short we were on the Vodafone network at £10 a month less than Sky hike price! No problems at all. No evening slow down either. Can't remember an outage! We TV etc and listen to radio over IP (Sonos) all the time.
