That looks like a very intriguing combination, John, and It's interesting that the PSB M4U 2 review is almost 8-years old. There's a used/like new pair on Amazon at the moment for £169.99. There's also a pair of their more up-to-date cans on eBay, the PSB M4U 8 Wireless Bluetooth Headphones. They're selling used, but look like they're in great condition, and come with their original box/accessories for £99.99 with free delivery. It's a shame the reviewers think there's song called “From Frank to Hendrix” by Neil Young. though.

I think they had a lot of positive reviews Jerry has a pair and likes them. I like they are clean and fast with good detail and hoping the treble calms down It is a nice simple set up I doubt I ever be a serious headphone guy as I tend to see the faults to quickly.

What phone you got, John? My ancient Huawei PSmart has a rather nifty equaliser for headphones use which could reduce the treble.
Must admit I don't hear the PSB M4U as bright, just nice and lively. I suspect it may well be the DAC in the Helm Bolt that is a bit too bright, or maybe as you say something just needs to run in for a bit.

Have you tried plugging the headphones directly into your phone rather than via the Helm Bolt?
Having tried various amps/DACs, I always use my headphones this way now. It works fine for me.

Your phone doesn't have a normal 3.5mm headphone socket?

Whilst I was happy with the sound on the Helm Bolt connecting via USB C is not ideal if on the move so I got the Fiio BTR 5 to replace as I can use the headphone socket which is more secure Only a slight difference in sound variation the Helm Bolt having a bit more detail and the Fiio a bit more warmth and not needing any eq on the top end with my setup using the Fiio www.fiio.com/btr5

Wow the PSB. I miss my PSB m4u2 quite a bit, they broke.. I'd like to see if its possible to fix them. Just a gorgeous sound created by Paul Barton.
Recently I was in an ebay auction for the m4u8, bid started at $30, which I knew was too low and thought I almost had them at $100 and was outbid in literally the last 30 seconds as the highest bid then skyrocketed above $200.
Will read up on the pairings mentioned here thanks.

I have the PSB m4u2 with integrated amp. I chose these over close to 20 other mid-fi headphones that auditioned that day.
The m4u2 have an integrated amp that can be clicked on and then they sound sublime.
But what im not understanding is that with amp clicked on and then a another external amp (Sony PHA1A) added into the chain they sound even better. Is it possible that both amps can be accessed simultaneously by the headphones?
