Modern Lovers - Modern Lovers (1976)
Although the date implies different, it's no joke.
An album I listen to frequently. The original album is one of my favourites!
Jerry Harrison ended up with Talking Heads; David Robinson with The Cars.
When my eldest daughter was young, Modern Lovers Live was fun to play. But in all honesty, way too folky.
Jonathan Richman brought The Modern Lovers to Wellington in the 80's. I went to see them, but walked out before the end. Was hoping for something else.
One of my daughters won't let me play anything by Jonathan Richman when she's in the house. He has that kind of voice (David Sylvian is another).
But, this album is good imho

On the album, there were only 9 tracks. Ended on Modern World.

Thanks, Brett, I haven't played this for years. I still have the LP I bought when it was released and I'm looking forward to playing it again and "Roadrunner" is another of those songs that is quite 'transportative' to another time and place for me.

Having listened to this and looked at Discogs I now realise that I have "Rock'N'Roll with Jonathan Richmond and the Modern lovers" as an LP (wrong country at the moment to check, but I remember the cover) and the single with "Roadrunner (once)" and "Roadrunner (Twice)" as the A/B - non-picture sleeve. I bought them both at the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street, London in 1977 and I'm pretty sure I bought a copy of "My Aim is True" and a 12" single by Elvis Costello and the Attractions at the same time. I suspect that the single was "Watching the Detectives". I'm enjoying this album a lot though. It would certainly get 5/5 from me!

Well this is proving interesting as I just look up that 12" single. I know it has a plain black sleeve and I now realise that it can't be that as it wasn't released in that format until 1979. I do have the live version that is on it though, but bought later.

I remember buying the "Roadrunner" 45. This should be an interesting trip down memory lane.

Gosh, it's a long time since I heard this! After 'Roadrunner', the Velvet Underground influence is glaringly obvious. Loving the warped guitar playing during 'Pablo Picasso'!

Coincidentally I recently followed a rabbit down a Modern Lovers hole when I found John Cale didn't write Pablo Picasso John Peel played a few tracks on here too Our Jonathon does have a distinctive voice Might get to love it if I could play it frequently enough 3/5 at the moment

I took another listen to this last night and enjoyed it once again. One thing though - I really dislike that cheesy rinky-dink organ sound that is there on most of the album. It was very common with American bands of the late 60s and 70s and is one small step better than a stylophone, as far as I'm concerned! On too few parts of the album, like the end of 'Old World', for example, it grows up and gets a bit more beefy, which I can live with.
I'll give the album a 4/5 and will revisit some more of JR's work again at some time in the future. Still love that guitar playing on 'Pablo Picasso'!

I've been listening to this at last. It reminds me of an amalgam of bands, including Mink Deville, but less melodic. I do like a bit of keyboards in a band, but I agree with Chris that it's a bit one-dimensional.
I'm going to give it 3/5 as a bit of a throwback. Fun, but I won't be playing it too often. Not quite my thing.
