Is this a good one ?Makes sense to check before binning (recycling allegedly) batteries as we have so many devices with 2, 3 or 4 batteries. I often find I can re use a battery for months in a clock after another device with 2, 3 or 4 batteries stopped working

Ebay has them for a couple of quid. Most are the same model Seems a no brainer which is apt for me

Batteries need to be tested under load. Just testing them open voltage doesn't really tell you much (unless they're completely flat).

Doesn't the meter show what they have left ?
Flat or not is a nice step up from binning them

No, it doesn't work like that. You will get a rough indication, but different batteries can supply different current (due to their internal impedance): a button battery much less than a C cell. Open voltage, with no load, they can register quite high and appear to be full. Putting them under load gives the best indication.

Aha
A look around doesn't tell me enough
How do I find a checker that tests under load

There you go. Don't test them too often, it may fall apart after, I don't know, 100 tests?

Closest I got was a car battery tester on Ebay
Thanks
100 and fail would be too low - ow !

At that price, it hardly matters
