I think your spell checker is in the browser you use Mike.

Spell checker is indeed a part of your browser. I have just installed the English/GB pack for Firefox, prompted by this thread, so thanks Mike for giving me the push to change something that has irritated me for quite some time

In Windows 8.1, go to Control Panel | Language. Make sure English (UK) is a selected language. If you have several, make sure it's the default (top of the list).

What word processor or browser are you using, wii? It could be a local rather than global setting.

Global settings would be in the Windows OS, but you say you've checked that. Therefore there must be another language setting locally in Chrome.
<checks>
...and there is! Go to Settings, click Show Advanced Settings, then further down is Language and Input Settings. Click that button and you can set the default language to use.
