This is my other choice and I have chosen something that is going to be a lot more challenging. This is from the film The Fountain. It is not a great film IMO but I do like the music score. It combines elements of contemporary classical music with post rock . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fountain_(soundtrack)To be honest I suspect mostly 1s and 2s Not quite a 5 from me but I wanted to counter balance my other selection

I rather like Clint Mansell. This is going to be fun!

It's classic Mansell and he writes incidental music very well. I don't think it holds up as stand-alone music all the way through but he has a vibe all of his own in this kind of material. 4/5.
This is also very good Mansell writing...

I don't know the film or composer!

I usually find film music a bit difficult, as it's not really intended to be heard standalone. Its structure and moods necessarily follow the effectively random narrative of the scenes of the film.
But judged on its own merits, I liked this OST a lot.
Definitely worth more than a 3, but not up to the Gold Standard set by Howard Shore's LOTR music. 4 will do nicely.

I enjoyed the soundrack and several parts grabbed my attention, but it seems very much a soundtrack and, without the visuals, I ended up treating it as background music while I worked. I like the Chronos Quartet and there were certainly some impressive soundscapes created for the soundtrack. I'd even play it again, but always as background. Loud background yes, but background nonetheless and so a 3 for me.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I've seen four or five films he's contributed soundtracks too, but none that stick in my mind because of the music. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it though. It's not quite "ambient," it was a tad more attention-seeking than that, but not so much that any repetition palled. It flowed nicely, I thought. I wish I could get the similarity (to me, anyway) between track one and the theme from the wonderful "Unforgiven" TV series with Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar out of my head.
I'm solidly with Jerry on this one, especially with his "Howard Shore" comment. 4/5 from me too.

I got so carried away with the Beethoven that I forgot about this - I'll be back!

I would say it makes a nice 'appetiser' in that it makes me wonder what images it was composed for, so it does its job very well.
Very atmospheric, Holy Dread! is particularly chilling. I wasn't expecting it to kick in like it does, gave me a bit of a scare.
I found the music surprisingly affecting and an intriguing listen, has to be a 4.

I remember this being an epic film, well worth watching and made even better by Mansell's score.
