I took a little drive out in the snowy slush this morning, to recharge the BRZ's battery and stretch its legs. I was also testing my new 4K dashcam, which is not bad at all for the princely sum of $116.
Has anyone here had to use dashcam footage in an insurance claim?

Good detail, good price Have toyed with the idea of a helmet cam when on the bike Some very cheap ones around - that may a long way off yours

I nearly bought a dashcam for Jeanette, but in the end we thought that documenting her driving would probably cost us more money than it might save us.

I don't like the concept at all. We are probably one of the most spied on people on the planet and spying on each other just makes it next level.

It's not spying, it's protection.

It is spying. It isn't protection. I've already told you it's for my protection. It has nothing to do with spying. Spying on whom, FFS?

Obviously, you are potentially spying on any of the folk who try to perpetrate insurance fraud against you. There's quite a lot of that about. I'm not sure I'm over concerned about their right to privacy.
I've been thinking of getting one for that reason.

Like it or not, no-one has a right to privacy in a public place.

I've set mine to start recording when I start the engine and stop recording when I stop. It records on a loop, creating an endless last 5 mins of my journey. It'll stop recording if the g-sensor thinks I've had an accident.
Typically, I would never look at the footage unless I need it for a Police or insurance report.

My reason for getting a helmet cam would be to catch some of the interesting things I see and share - to reveal to all how not interesting they are Useful to have if I have an accident

We're all, living, "In The Village" now... Spying. It's a covert activity. A dash cam is there in plain view for all to see, and one might assume it could be in operation.

Well, exactly. My dashcam is in plain sight and I'm on public roads. It's getting tiresome, but I'm not spying on anyone and I really don't need another opinion on it.
So, who uses one and have you ever needed to use the footage?

Only been driving again for the past 2 1/2 years after a break of 30+ years. Don't feel any need for one. Are useful for capturing some idiots on the road.
Come in handy when the odd UFO crops up too.

Would have been useful when a deer ran across the country lane about 6" in front of me.
Same road, few hundred yards back just enough room for 2 cars to carefully pass each other Evening one couple walking horses ambling along. Happy with that. Next evening a lunatic in possibly a Subaru must have been doing 60/70mph plus. Heard the engine some way off and was ready to head into the undergrowth. Not happy. Helmet cam could have recorded his plate. Would the fuzz do anything though ?

Must have been a wannabe rally driver.
I've seen some cars do 50 down our lane and that's fast enough.

Guess so. Not sure I have ever seen anyone drive so fast down that road. Horses likely on any road around here. Last couple of years bunches of cyclists too
