Tim, it's an absolute must! I hadn't been for about 30 years ... Just don't go in the height of summer whatever you do - the roads will be absolute hell ... The countryside can be quite spectacular and of course if you like walking, you get rewarded with some incredible views. I really enjoyed being up in the Northern part where it's that bit less busy.

If you go, be sure to visit Wast Water, probably the least known of the lakes. It's more remote and really interesting in a foreboding way. There's something about the place that has a similar feeling to parts of Loch Ness.
This is from 2010...

Tim, it's an absolute must! Well I'll have plenty of time on my hands soon, so I can fill in all my unticked travel boxes. I deliberately have pretty much covered all my long-haul destinations now (with a few holes of Japan, Laos, South Africa and Argentina), leaving Europe and the easier closer to home destinations until I retire. I still haven't been to Paris or Rome, but again nice and easy to do for an old duffer like me I need to dive Blue Corner in Palau as well and maybe cage dive with a great white, but that's cold water and I'm not too keen on cold water diving after freezing my nuts off in 14 degrees C water at Galapagos!

Tim, it is my dream to dive Palau and Truk - would love to do all the WW2 wrecks. Trouble is I'm not interested in re-breathers and don't do Nitrox so my options will be limited ... I think we must start a diving thread!
Paris and Rome are essential of course ...

I think we must start a diving thread! Now that's a great Idea Jules. Great pictures by the way Colin and I may be back for some hints & tips about the Lake District next year, so stick around. Windermere looks beautiful and I really like the desolate picture of Wast Water Martin, reminds me of New Zealand. I need to buy a new camera before I head off up there.
