My LG TV has the Miracast facility, but come what may I can't get it to work with my Lenovo T540p.
So, a helpful person suggested Chromecast, and I read up on it, and it seemed what I needed, so I ordered a version 3, which came today.
I think I've got the device set up ok on the LG TV, but after a lot of brain ache I found this little gem.
"We no longer support Chromecast setup on a computer. To set up your Chromecast, please use a mobile device."
I don't have (or want) a "mobile device (phone or tablet)" and even my Chromebook (life expired) seems unable to get the required app.
Mr Grumpy.

That is a pain.
Touch of arrogance on their part

That's a dirty bloody trick. Mike has it right, pure arrogance, and bugger the customer.

For a Windows laptop, your best bet is to use a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. Works perfectly to mirror the laptop (and Android tablets) to the big screen.

That Microsoft bit is a bit expensive though.
I've spoken to Currys and it should be collected by their courier for return tomorrow.
Back to the long HDMI lead on the Chromebook for the time being.
