I don't know anything about this piece, look it up if you want. Jules - if you want any help using a search engine, you only have to ask. Lutoslawski - well, I've heard a fair few bits of his music and tbh it hasn't impressed me much, very seldom causing me to listen to the end! Avantgarde Euro contemporary crap, usually. But, I happened to give the Concerto for Orchestra a go and was surprised and impressed. And listened all the way through! Big and loud at times, as a consolation prezzie for Martin after making him listen to some sissy solo piano music. Anyway, I like it - see what you think, assuming you haven't come across it already. I've tried a few recordings, all of them at least decent, but I think Barenboim gets the nod here, he forms it into more of a coherent whole for me. Try some others, there are differences in approach. open.qobuz.com/album/0809274901569

I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting something much worse. Nobody at all fell down a cast-iron spiral staircase carrying a tray or two of cutlery during the whole thing, and parts of it sounded almost "English" to me. Sadly, that occasioned a rush of blood to the head and kept me listening into the third symphony. That was much closer to what I was expecting from the Concerto. A decent 3/ 5 from me.

Well, if no one else wants to give this a try, I've just come across a symphony that has knocked me base over apex by a composer entirely new to me - I'll wait till Wednesday then put it up as my 4th and final entry for the month.

Nice one Jerry, I enjoyed this a lot - it's really potent at times and would love to hear this live.
The orchestra are superb and I'm imagining the scale of this will sound great on the big rig.
4 from me.

Oh yes, of course, Satie, that's definitely a bit sissy. Ok, if we can get the responses in by tomorrow on the Lutoslawski - surprisingly positive so far! - how about it Pinch? - then there's probably just time to squeeze in a 4th selection for the month.

I am pleasantly surprised, too! This is really quite lyrical and then has bursts of Stravinsky-like fff blasts just for the hell of it. In fact it's quite Stravinsky-like in style if not in sound. Really excellent recording, too. I know I'm going to listen to it again, so it gets a 4/5 from me.
P.S. the symphony isn't bad and I quite like the style with a brass fanfare opening most short movements.

A bit late to the party - apologies, Jerry! - but giving it a spin now. I've found a few versions - trying this one first.
