Black Ravioli Base Equipment Support Shelf
The Black Ravioli Base Equipment Support Shelf is a large metal and ‘black stuff’ sandwich with four BR feet embedded in the underside. Finish is a pleasant brushed aluminium and the whole thing looks well made – light but tough. It is available in three and four layer versions – I have the three layer model.
The BR feet are connected internally to the top plate for decoupling, the whole sandwich designed to absorb mechanical energy. BR call their product ethos System Energy Drain and, naturally, many of the products are designed to work together.
I have a stack consisting of an Electric Beach S1NX shelf with LKS DAC, Mutec reclocker and BG7TBL master clock all sitting on top, with the BR shelf supporting the whole lot. Each component sits on a further set of Black Ravioli Big Pads or Pads to provide further isolation. These are the most sensitive components to vibrations in my digital chain so it’s not over-the-top to make every effort to keep them free of perturbances which would otherwise pollute the sensitive conversion to analogue.
I placed the stack directly underneath the S1NX so that I could evaluate just the effects of the Base in action. In use, and despite the abundance of isolation already in place, the BR shelf certainly makes its presence felt. There is a further calming of the noise floor with detail exquisitely exposed, enhanced perception of low level detail way back in the stage, better note decay and shimmer on cymbals, and slightly tighter and deeper bass. Air movements and infra-bass are very well defined and add so much to the enjoyment of the music.
Other Black Ravioli products in use in my system are the Pads and Big Pads under all my components, and the Eflos (Black Hole) series of individual grounding boxes, one per digital component. All of these products contribute towards lower noise floor, wider and deeper soundstaging and extended dynamics.
You can start small (such as one of these shelves or a set of Big Pads) and build up from there as funds allow. My advice is to use Pads or Big Pads under your most vibration sensitive component (usually the DAC or the shelf holding the turntable) and to use a grounding box on your DAC or streamer in digital systems.
The Black Ravioli Base is a great way to jump straight into a good level of isolation.
My thanks to David Brook of MCRU for supplying the BR Base Shelf.
