Its been a while since I reported on a trip to Vic. The last time I heard a more basic model of the TangBang drivers and whilst they had great treble they were a bit compressed in the mids making them not suitable for the music I enjoy. Not a issue for Vic but for me a big put off. EMS LB8EX MKII These drivers have a way of immersing you deeper into the music. The effortless of the system is up their with large horns but no colouration issues that sometimes go with this approach. We first played a few test tracks we know well Horse with no name and something from the first Ben Harper album Nothing drew attention to itself the music has had a sense of openness to it. Vic asked me to put something more challenging to see how it would cope so I put on Leprous rewind and Dream Theater In the Presence of Enemies Part 2 It had that dark sinster sound I was hoping to hear but also more detail that I am used too. I was blown away by them. The only issue was a slight harshness that is probably due to them not being fully run in as they require over a 100 hours for the treble to fully settle and had about 60 hours on them. www.emspeaker.com/ems_products.htmlwww.emspeaker.com/fiche_LB8EXMKII.pdfThe TangBangWB-1772-8 The treble on these is great and what they do with Jazz and acoustic music is special. They sound pretty good with my heavy stuff as well ( no congestion issues) but they do not immerse you in the music the same way The EMS drivers I would get for my system when circumstances change The TangBang I would get if my music tastes were more geared to small ensemble pieces whether jazz or classical where that intimacy shines www.tb-speaker.com/products/w8-1772EMS Driver TangBang Driver

Fascinating - I had no idea at all what the title of the thread was about!
I see the TangBang (great name) has a whizzer type of parasitic cone. In my experience those are always bad news creating a fuzzy/grainy colouration in the upper mid / lower treble but that doesn't seem to be what you heard.

That is usually my experience also Jerry I think Vic cuts off a bit of the extension a bit as can be too much according to Vic. Both Vic and myself have not liked whizzer cones in the past but no mid treble issues just more suited for acoustic and music that is more intimate. They do scale but the EMS do scale better as they immerse you and hit you with dynamics when the music demands it I forgot to say how good the EMS drivers sound at low volume levels
