At that price, go for them and worry about the controller afterwards. I'm sure you could dig the circuit out and we could pore over it and discuss how to make one.

I wanted these in the 70s and still do. And a bigger room. JBL Paragons.

This thread was the one that finally persuaded me to join. I'm sure I will have pics of some interesting bits on my laptop. I'll take a look next time I get it out. If only IPads stored more data.
I was looking back at a thread on PFM the other day and it was recounting all the brands that have sadly disappeared. It made me realise there are a few bits I'd still like to seek out. JRT speakers (AD1 and Micro), Lynwood Emerald amp and maybe a Zeta arm for starters. I just picked up a pair of Dean Alto 2 speakers which are charming. IVe had a pair in the past though, so it's no surprise.

Gale, Celef and IMF all made speakers that I enjoyed, although I may be a little rosy-tinted about them now. The Gale 401s I restored not so long ago I could easily live with, though.

I've often fancied 401s. I think I remember seeing your restoration thread too. I always admire anyone who takes the time to restore old treasures. I'm not great with electronics but woodwork and metalwork are fair game, as is re-foaming. I've done a few pairs of 301s in my time but I've never heard or even seen 401s in the flesh.

A very nice job and they are better built than I remembered too. You get a lot of speaker for the money. I wonder what a similar model would cost today.

Mike's got three sets of Isobariks, you've got two Zetas.......... So this is where all the quality gear is being stashed!
I'm using a Xenon MCS right now and liking it a lot. The Zeta has always looked so lovely though, especially if it's a boxed one. I also really liked the Kuzma Stogi for the same reasons although the finish wasn't as polished.

I remember reading that Frank Kuzma (is that his name? - crap memory) based his design on the Zeta but was rather shocked when he first saw the two side by side because the Zeta was smaller and less massively built than he had imagined!

I'd heard that the Kuzma was based on the Zeta. It seems to have changed a few times. The most attractive one (to me) was with the massive tapered arm tube. I've never seen one in the flesh but my friend had a Zeta that I could have bought. Tonearm have made big differences to the sound when I've changed them. Not just in quality, but in terms of their whole presentation. I had the same model Xenon MCS years ago on a different deck and really didn't take to it at all, despite its clarity. It just didn't have any "get up and go". I only bought this one as a stop-gap but it's nothing like I remember.

It's a stereo speaker in one box, sideboard sized. £20,000 new in today's money in 1960 and "if you have to ask...." second-hand today. As used By Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and many loaded music celebrities at the time. I believe they made them from around 1958 till early 80's but only made 1000 in all that time...
