Hi Chaps,
Thank you for accepting me in this forum.
After fifty six years in the game I want to purchase a 'new' pre and power amplifier. I have had separates all my life with the exception of my current McIntosh MA5100.
I have a dilemma between two choices, an Art Audio Quintet available in the UK and a Woodside Radford STA-35. The Quintet operates in pure class A, putting out 15 wpc in triode and 25 wpc in pentode. The Radford 35 wpc.
I have a pair of Tannoy Devons [89dB], rest of the system comprises a 401/SME 3009/AT-Pickering-Shure and Meridian 507 CD player. I still have not made up my mind about preamps thought someone recommended a Shindo. I listen exclusively to classical music.
What are your opinions regarding amplifiers? I am aware I will need a step-up transformer for the Quinted.
Cheers,
Horacio

Hi Horacio and a very warm welcome to TAS.
A couple of years ago we had a get together and listened to lots of different gear. I remember there were some exceptional Art Audio power amps on the end of a 401. The grip they had was exceptional and just what you need with your Tannoys. But of course the Radford / Tannoy combo is pretty legendary. Am sure both would give much pleasure.
Great to hear you love classical too - there's a few of us here!

Hi Horacio and welcome to TAS.
I had the use of an Art Audio Quintet in my system some years ago and thought it a very good amplifier. I am not familiar with the Radford STA-35 but I did know the 25 quite well.
Based on my personal preference, I'd go for the Art Audio. However, try and listen if you possibly can.

I heard a few Radfords and really loved them. I would think it will just come down to personal preference ChrisB can talk a bit more about the Radfords

Hi Horacio and welcome to The Audio Standard from me. I am a long term user of the old Radford STA-15, an amp I know extremely well. I will never part with it. I also own a pair of old Levinson stereo amps that I bi-amp with. I switch between the two three or four times a year. My speakers are pretty power hungry Mirage M3-Si and the Radford (22 watts in real life) copes pretty well with them.
I haven't spent a lot of time with the Woodside that you are looking at, but have heard it sounding well a few times, back when it was available new.
Moving on to Art Audio, I had the pleasure of having a pair of the Tempo monoblocks in my system for a few weeks back in the 1990s - these were the basis for the amps that Jules refers to above, so I understand. They ran two pairs of EL34s per channel, so quite a bit of power on tap. There was a half power pseudo single ended mode to, I seem to remember. They were superb and I really liked them. However, after they left, I bought the Radford, so I think that probably tells you all you need to know from my point of view!
The Art Audio does look beautiful though!

Thank you chaps for the great suggestions.
I do not have the chance to listen to either amplifier, one is in Canada, the other in Nottingham. I had a ST-15 too many years ago, also a Leak and QUADs. Nowadays they are seen as absolute top shelf stuff because the secret to all these amps are the transformers, hand wound, all beautifully English made and an art that's been long lost, except for some Japanese exotic transformer winders like Tango, Tamura, Sowter in Cambridgeshire or Canadian Plitron.
I remember that when I heard that Woodside Audio was launching a new series of valve amps I immediately contacted Sir Arthur, he told me that Woodside hired several old employees just to wind the new transformers the same way they did in the past.
A dear friend of mine, who passed away years ago, told me that the glory days of audio - the true golden age of hi-fi - was this period, the late forties through the late sixties, and tubes illuminated the scene. What remained from that era was, surprisingly, not usually sought out of reverence for the old but for quality of construction and sonics. He said that sweaty ironworkers no longer purified the iron as they once did, Wonderful PCB-capacitor dielectric material is now banned as carcinogenic. Cobalt, for alnico magnets, is now a strategic and costly element.
Cheers,

Nice to see a Tannoy entusiast here. I had Dorsets, Berkeleys and then the HPDs in DIY built Rect. GRFs made of birch plywood.
I used a very nice 25wpc project build KT88 power tubed, 6SN7 signal tubes Push Pull amp. It had soft start, silicon power regulation, a massive power transformer and Lundahl output transformers. Used film resistors and nice polyprop caps throughout.
Something along those lines would be my recommendation.
Do let us know what you go for, and how it sounds.
I've got Alnico magnets in both the JBL 2482 and Vitavox S2 drivers I currently use.

Hi, I had a pair of Reds in GRF corner cabinets and also 15" Silvers in Lancaster cabinets. Two months ago I purchased the Devons special built for Martin Hannett from a chap in Manchester.

Just a thought, Horacio, are you aware of Radford Revival? You can snag yourself a brand new STA-15 or 25 with a good Radford pedigree and authenticity from these guys. www.radfordrevival.co.uk/

Hi Horacio Welcome to the forum. Whilst being a classical devotee I can't advise on your current quandary - I'm not familiar with Radford or Art Audio gear, and my only advice about Tannoys would be to avoid them! But it would be good if you involved yourself in the classical music threads here, it's always good to share discoveries and opinions.

Hi Chris,
Yes, I have been looking st the RadfordRevival website, the STA costs £2800 quite a few quid more than what I can spend.
This country is now a mess, violent crime is rampant up north, it is in the hand of communists and democrats, no law, no order, no police, and if the left wins the elections we won't have any other alternative than to pack our belongings and move to Europe, we should have returned to the Continent years ago but due to my wife's health issues we are now living in Miami.
Cheers,
Horacio

Hi Chris,
In the How To section I could not find how to attach photos from my computer, I do not have my photos in an image hosting service such as Flickr, etc.
Please help.

Hi Horacio
As this is a free-of-charge forum, we cannot host photos. Therefore you will need to use a host like Flickr to show your photos. Flickr is free below about 1000 photos, and it doesn't take long to create an account.

Hi Horacio As this is a free-of-charge forum, we cannot host photos. Therefore you will need to use a host like Flickr to show your photos. Flickr is free below about 1000 photos, and it doesn't take long to create an account. Use the Tappatalk app, so much easier! Just one click, find in camera, media drives etc click to attach them from anywhere on your device or Google/OneDrive etc. Done. No faffing uploading them to Flickr etc. Tappatalk does the hosting. No limit on number. It will also let you edit posts and fix broken pics like the Photobucket debacle caused (when browsers would not), and the same may happen to Flickr at some point - who knows?! Of course Tappatalk might go too - nothing is forever but, I've gladly paid the pennies for lifetime sub. I could not do without it on my phone to see what's going on on my fav forums.

It's spelled 'TapaTalk' with one 'p' and I recommend it, too. Use it on your phone.
