Yesterday I had an epiphany with the most achingly beautiful documentary on Netflix - Mountain. The breathtaking footage features some of finest landscape photography I have ever seen. And also some of the scariest antics ... My mind was well and truly blown. The soundtrack is also masterful, under the baton of Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. There's a sublime mix of his own compositions and those by contemporary / classical composers. And would you believe he is also the lead violin ... Arvo Part's 'Fratres' is mind-bending in both its technical difficulty and otherworldly atmosphere - one of the finest violin works in my opinion. I can't quite believe it has taken a Netflix documentary to introduce me to this man's profound talent. "This group must be the best chamber orchestra on earth" - The Times So there you have it. Here are links to the film, the OST and a fascinating introduction to Tognetti - I wish I had discovered this guy before his last visit to these shores! I've just read that his 2020 residency at the Barbican has been cancelled. I do need to visit Australia though ... www.netflix.com/title/80221498?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=cpwww.southbankcentre.co.uk/blog/who-violinist-richard-tognettiwww.southbankcentre.co.uk/blog/who-violinist-richard-tognetti

Don't worry Jerry - I've had that in my playlist for ages! Just hadn't taken any notice of who made it ...

Listening to Tognetti's Brahms 3 atm. Brahms 3rd symphony played by a chamber orchestra. Seems like a contradiction in terms! Live recording - going by the 'cover photo' the violins at least are standing up. Strange. Hmm, chamber orchestra notwithstanding it's a weighty sound. Enjoying it so far.

I'm looking forward to what he does with the Beethoven.
What do you gents think of Arvo Part's 'Fratres' ?

I didn't like his Beethoven and Bach "Fugue" transcription album - gave up quite quickly on it - irritatingly jolly!
Mind you, apparently it was Gramophone Editor's Choice, so what do I know!

I wasn't going to bother with the transcriptions anyway so not disappointed there ...
