Several weeks’ ago I purchased a Benchmark LA4 in-line pre-amp. Recycled my old pre-amp.
I required balance control and got proper output for my DAC at the same time. Fancy
The Benchmark does provide a more refined presentation. That pesky mid-range sound spectrum benefits the most. Multiple sounds/instruments/voice sometimes crowd the mid-range are better defined.
Bass remains tight. Probably gave my old DAC a new lease-on-life.
