Very interesting, Oliver. It confirms my conviction that if you have a DAC with a properly implemented chipset-based digital volume control, you're better off using that with a simple unity gain buffer rather than an analogue implemented external volume control. I wouldnt use any digital volume control. I would rather have a resistor based stepped attenuator with unity gain buffer and used that between a dac and the power amp...which is exactly how I have mine.

It's an interesting topic - MartinT - is it worth moving all these posts about preamps to it's own thread and keeping this thread for the Topping D90?

My sources are all digital. Keeping the signal in the digital domain and manipulating the data in a 32-bit word space for volume control, before the conversion to analogue, keeps it utterly transparent. That is what I hear in practice.

I think we're using lots of different types of kit here Oliver.
I also tried a solid state buffer I got from China but it got its butt kicked by the RVC in my system.
Are your sources digital, analogue or a combination of both?

When did " Keeping the signal in the digital domain and manipulating the data in a 32-bit word space for volume control, before the conversion to analogue," become hifi-speak?

Are your sources digital, analogue or a combination of both? Yes, both. Digital fed from a PecanPi and Analogue from a Bigbottle Phonostage

Are your sources digital, analogue or a combination of both? Jules, I'd be happy to send you a unit to try when they are built up and ready to go. No harm having a listen. I strongly suspect the chinese thing, to be much like most chinese things....tat This is a UK designed circuit by a very accomplished engineer, and to be honest, what he doesnt know about HiFi design with opamps isnt worth knowing. This is an ultra wide bandwidth device...and I mean ultra wide. I think we discussed GHZ at 0.00002% THD the time, but can't remember the exact figures or what he said in truth. I will double check with him. I am visiting him next week for amplifier upgrades.

Thanks Oliver, certainly sounds interesting. I've not been able to use my system since lockdown due to everyone being at home and so just been listening with headphones but let's chat when you're up and running with them.

I am limited in my choices I had a active pre but very hard to dial in volume as the extra gain would mean a small adjustment suddenly becoming to Loud. Any passive device would have to have either 2 XLR outs or 1 XLR and 1 RCA out. The cheap Chinese ones only output either XLR or RCA but not both together. I really do not know if I need it in my system.

LOL - we'll tell you if we get bored! I'm serious matey, I got some really nasty behaviour towards me on another forum and got no protection. I decided to just stick to my own little forum where people can visit to read it deliberately. Ill share here though, but please do say say if its too much

Aye, don't worry on that score, Mr B. It'll be made more than apparent when you get over enthusiastic and star boring the liver out of everyone.
Expect a PM for a trip down Memory Lane when I have the time & motivation.
