On TAS we do not mind if people do not share their names I know, John. But it’s kind of nice chatting to someone else, on the level of a fellow human being. You know what I mean Anyway, if “Pinch” wishes to remain anonymous, that’s fine, and I shall reply later to his post, and also to your last one, as you too bring up some valid points Marco.

A question for those who are constantly on the upgrade path. What do you feel your system is lacking in? Is there a specific problem that you are trying to address, or are you just looking for a semi-mythical 'better' state? Do you have a clearly defined path that you want to follow or are you just being opportunistic and trying different approaches as they occur to you, or as they present themselves? I have recently had three large upgrades, I don't usually upgrade in quick succession like this but it just happened to all happen that way.The first was a stunning new power amp, second was a new, to me, pre amp and the third upgrade was a very special balanced power supply. Was there anything wrong with my system before? No not at all, all would say it was a very good set up indeed. So what was I trying to achieve with the upgrades, or where am I aiming at taking my hifi long term? All I have ever wanted is for my hifi system to reproduce music like a live band, nothing more than that. I know thats a tall order, but when I close my eyes, I want the music to sound as realistic as can be. Even in that, there is a large difference between an acoustic and an amplified performance, but if I am to consider these qualities as well then I would veer towards the acoustic performance sound as an amplified band is balanced at the PA desk and not a true representation, but that is splitting hairs for now. Did my three successive upgrades take me closer to my long term goal? Yes they certainly did, all in their different but similar ways, and I most definitely enjoying listening to music a lot more as it sounds so real, or as real as can be for now. My next upgrade is to seriously upgrade my Lampizator Open Baffle speakers. I have already had the Altec 15 inch mid range drivers and the Altec Horn tweeters shipped over from the States, but I have put them straight up into the loft as I really want to enjoy and to an extent quantify what I have achieved over the last three months. After my speaker upgrade, I plan to make some all my own cables, power chords, interconnects and speaker cables. I have been passed some very good intel so I am chomping at the bit to put these into practice. Watch this space.....

I think we should do our best to avoid Hi-Fi guru's. From my point of view my way works for me but might not work for someone else+1 - especially the latter half of the sentence.

Nothing is wrong with it. But it's fun to experiment and see what one can achieve. Plus the more one learns, the more one likes to experiment!

Thought about the OP question
The Irish (?) saying "Don't start from here if you want to get there" springs to mind
I'm a firm believer in constant improvement in all things In hifi this gives me a massive return as music means so much to me
Another question could be Can your system be improved and would that be good for you ?

Another question could be Can your system be improved and would that be good for you ? That's a very good question Mike. Everything can be improved, just as a high jumper might get that extra mm higher if they keep training and trying. I've stopped jumping now though, content at my level. My enjoyment is the discovery of a new artist/band or great new album. I have managed both today so I'm blissfully happy with a good days work and it's not even tea time! I've also just booked a ticket to see someone I didn't know was coming over, so I'm feeling even more pleased with myself. Getting a bit mad in November mind, 13 (maybe 14) gigs and counting . . . doh! Jeez, I love music

The question to ask yourself. Does your system make you listen to music and keep you wanting to check out your collection without needing to leave the listening room. If it does then check out those more obscure bands and groups expand your mind to different genre's and forget the pressure of feeling I need to............. This afternoon I have been working on some idea's for data transfer, however not achieved much at all the music has been soothing the soul to point my calculations have taken a back seat. Great music has this effect long may it continue

To listen to old and new favourites on an improved system is a new dimension. The new guys will never be played on the old system of course That is a lot of gigs !

Great music has this effect long may it continue I have always listened to music wherever I can. Listening to the guitar break in Stone Free in the 6th form unit almost had me expelled. The better system delivers more so there is even more chance of getting into trouble I don't *need* to improve the system now, but I'll take improvements

November is always a crazy month Mike, everyone is on tour before Christmas then it goes super quiet until March - I only have 6 for all of Dec, Jan & Feb. Tricky too, as you get a lot of date clashes in November, so I miss some people. There's 5 other shows I would like to go to, but you can't do them all Your comment TonyC about 'can you stay listening to music without wanting to leave the room' - I can't stop!

To be honest I been like that ever since I got into music I listen a lot and like discovering new bands and has little to do with my system and more to do with the way I am

I keep discovering bands that aren't new at all - just to me
Following Gustavo Santaolalla I found a raft of Spanish / South American outfits recently, Bajofondo Tango Club being one then off To Gotan Project.
Listening on a good system multiplies the enjoyment and experience enormously. Sofa Surfers exactly not my type of music but Encounters is so well made I get over it.
Discovering more nuances and detail in Family - A song for me and Faithless (another band not really my sort of music) - Sunday 8pm was a great way to start the day Never heard either of them like that before. Like different and very much better versions of the albums I thought I knew

I just have lots of money and like to chuck it at non-existent problems rather than on useful things like a new central heating system or double-glazing.

Or pointless things like clothes, shoes and food

Nothing is wrong with my system... until I read about other people's systems or reviews!
Then I get back to the music and forget about it for a little longer. I definately get more excited when I hear some new music I like than I do at the idea of a better system.
Well, bass is lacking because I'm using such small speakers (B&W CM1s from the 90s, not 2000s) - someone gave me a REL Q-bass sub but it needs a fix and re-foam. Matching CM2s for the CM1s would be great (to make the full Concept 90 speaker) but probably easier to think of a completely different model instead one day.
