Anyway, back to Mister Richter!
I have listened to nine tracks so far and I do like the music from the Woolf Works ballet because it works on its own terms; at least the familiar ‘loop' style of composition has progression, a sense of life and purpose about it. Too many of the other tracks strike me as good incidental music for TV dramas, but just don’t work for me in their own right …
I think one of the problems I have with Richter's general style of composition is that instruments are very rarely used to show off their individual strengths and characters. It is almost as if each one is programmed into his bedroom synthesiser where he twiddles away ad infinitum to create his melancholic soundscapes, which are all essentially variations on a theme ... In 'Dream 3', the cello is *nearly* allowed to express itself, but is carefully reined in so it doesn't detract from the soundscape as a whole. It’s all about the vibe …

Gosh I wonder how you get on with some of the Swedish and Icelandic stuff I listen too. The music is a lot sparser but for me it gives a connection into the landscape.

Let's give it a try!
I will dig out some Sibelius for you by return - lots of his work is inspired by the Finnish landscape ...

Sure, I understand but would you really put it ahead of the Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius etc? Yes.

A solid 4/5 from me John - and that's mostly because it's a greatest hits album, as I'm not mad on those as I never feel they flow. I really like his work though, especially as I'm a bit of a movie addict. Great choice

I understand Tim I prefer albums myself but I wanted to give a sense of the scope of his music than pick a film score

This live recording of On The Nature Of Daylight has rather spoiled me for any others.
Easily the best MR I have heard to-date, for me.
