That John Williams, what a lad! Obvious when pointed out, but I've seen those Star Wars movies many times and it never occurred to me!

Me too!
Blatant is the word.
Use of The Planets is none too subtle either ...

Yes, I thought Mars was the most blatant.

Just call me Poireau. My son is currently learning Chopin’s fabulous Mazurka in A Minor No4 Op17. I thought it sounded familiar - there’s a motif in it which sounds remarkably similar to one used in the main theme from the Cary Grant film ‘Charade’, composed by Henry Mancini. I had watched the film a few weeks ago so it was relatively fresh in my mind. So just for my amusement I decided to investigate a little further. I didn't have to go far - looking at Wiki’s page for Mancini, it states - < According to Mancini biographer John Caps, the young Mancini “preferred music arranging to any kind of musical performance, but taking apart a Chopin mazurka or Schumann sonata in order to play it helped him see…how the puzzle of form, meter, melody, harmony, and counterpoint had been solved by previous composers > Yes, the structural and melodic influence now becomes very clear indeed. Your Honour, I rest my case!

I was watching a very interesting programme on movie soundtrack composition and at one point they were eulogising Hans Zimmer. Kind of ironic that they showed a clip from Gladiator, at which point I thought I was listening to Holst's Mars from The Planets. Subtle, not. Sure enough a little research shows that predictably I wasn't the first person to be struck by the similarities - in 2006 Holst's estate filed a lawsuit citing copyright infringement. You'll get the picture very quickly here .. ... And here's the programme I was watching. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0002pf6/score-cinemas-greatest-soundtracks
