Hey guys I’ve pretty much upgraded all my stereo components, cables etc. but I have been using a vintage (30+ years) pioneer elite pre-amp which still seems to preform like the day I bought it. I am wondering though if I am doing my ears a disservice due to dried out electrolytic capacitors? Some say given hours, temperature and environmental conditions caps should be replaced anywhere between 20-30 years while others say when they fail. Any of your thoughts on this are appreciated. Thanks

It certainly not going to do it any harm I once had a vintage Pioneer as a preamp it was a lovely bit of kit

The Pioneer Elite series are all very nice performing bits of kit and worthy of keeping well serviced. At 30+ years of age there may well be ageing of at least the main reservoir caps and it would be worth having it serviced, switches and potentiometer contacts cleaned etc.

Keep the old girl going - you won't replace it easily or cheaply. No harm in getting it checked over and cleaned, I'd say.

... you won't replace it easily or cheaply ain’t that the truth .. Thanks guys, I will check around my area to determine who is qualified to check out, clean and replace ageing caps. I would like to do away with the pre-amp component and directly use a DAC to my amplifier. Whereas most would require a pre-amp for multiple connections my particular listening arrangements only require a DAC, no other component. The issue is I require a little ‘balance control’ in for my listening room to achieve the most desirable euphony. So a quality single source device with balance control and volume (although volume in my case would not be required) would be ideal.

I use my DAC for digital volume control, having done away with the preamp and just using a buffer.
There are many DACs with digital volume control these days, but I haven't seen one with balance. Perhaps someone has come across one?

Perhaps someone has come across one? Lexicon digital processors! Marvellous devices including full function preamp (remote controlled L/R balance included) and very natural sounding (to my ears anyway) vintage delta-sigma DAC. I have Lexicon DC-1 and MC-1. Available now and then on eBay for £100-£300. Very strongly recommended by Yours Truly.
