So are hybrid amps not good? Should I go for something like a quad 606 power amp? That's not what I said! Neither would I hold up a Quad 606 as the last word in solid state amps. Ultimately, you have to listen and decide for yourself. [br Sorry misread your answer.

Good point - way back, I had a 405-2, quite a feisty well controlled sound as I recall it. There are quite a few refurbed examples of those around - well worth considering as a more powerful take on the sound of the 306. The 405-2 is too old, I think, to buy an original one, it'd need to be well serviced, recapped.

OK, it's tempting to suggest Quad 606, 707 or 909. Or even 99. But I've a feeling that the 306 is quite a hard act to follow! I've heard one on a couple of occasions and been very impressed by its presence and enthusiasm. I've owned a 606, and I suspect (although I didn't do a direct comparison) that it was a bit laidback and relaxed compared to the 306. If taking the sound in that direction appeals to you then I'd say 'bigger Quad' would be a good way to go. But the 306 is a bundle of fun ime, and I think you might lose some of that. What speakers are you using? I'm using Fyneaudio F500's they are 90db and 8ohm . Great speakers but if I decide to change them I'm thinking a more powerful amp would open the gap for me. Yes I love the 306 great little amp but the lack of power keeps me stuck to certain speakers. Well, I've not come across those speakers before - very interesting design and good reviews. Tbh, if it were me I'd not upgrade the amp unless you also change the speakers to a harder to drive type. Once you have new speakers then choose an amp suited to drive them. Unless, of course, you just fancy an amp upgrade now with any speaker changes much further in the future. I can't argue with upgrading stuff - I change gear all the time! But the 306 is going to be a challenge to beat if you like its overall sound signature.

Yeah see that's the thing, I'm trying to get a future proof amp ,if I decide to change my speakers. I like the quad sound. Perhaps I should just try and hold out for a 606.

It's simple, Get yourself another 306 and bi-amp your speakers. Identical to the sound you like, but more of it.

As long as your speakers are bi-wire-able, you can do it You split the output cables from the pre amp, then you have two choices. No. 1 - each power amp becomes a monoblock but one side of each one, say the left channel, drives the tweeter and the right one drives the mid-bass
No. 2 - one power amp drives the tweeters in stereo and the other drives the mid bass in stereo.
If you can run to a bigger Quad amp rather than a 306, for this move, you can use option no. 2 & put it on the bottom end, to deliver more power where it will do the most good.
This is what I do with my Mark Levinson power amps - 100 wpc on the mid bass and 50 wpc on the treble.

But the next pair of speakers he buys would also have to be biwireable ... otherwise he won't have future-proofed the amplification. So once again, the choice of future speakers would be constrained.

Used mine with a 25 Watt Technics Receiver. Now that was a lovely thing. I didn't think much of the sonics at the time I seem to remember compared to my brother's valve kit, but it was a real looker.
