A new comet is on its way in from the outskirts of the solar system. It's on the verge of naked eye visibility already - maybe, just maybe, it's going to be a really spectacular sight in our night sky. "Right now, odds are that Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) will be wonderful. Just maybe it will be the most amazing thing you will ever see — a great comet for the history books." Between the end of March and the middle of June, ATLAS will slip through several familiar constellations and come close to some easily identifiable bright stars, including Capella, Aldebaran, and Betelgeuse. Here's its path in the sky over the next few months ... astronomy.com/news/observing/2020/03/comet-atlas-may-soon-be-visible-to-the-naked-eyeA recent photo, yes, it really is green!

Projected brightness of the comet in the link below (I can't seem to cut&paste it); dots are actual observations to-date, red line is the mathematical model / forecast (quite uncertain, depends a lot on details about the comet's structure which we don't yet know). Y-axis (left, vertical) is the apparent magnitude (i.e. brightness) - 6th magnitude is just visible to the naked eye on a really clear and dark night. All but the brightest star (Sirius) are less than or equal to 0 magnitude. So the forecast is that the comet will be a very obvious object in the sky. (Magnitude is a logarithmic scale, so each change of 1 magnitude is equivalent to a brightness change of about x2.5). www.aerith.net/comet/catalog/2019Y4/2019Y4.html

Dang, the blessed thing is breaking up. Much less likely now to put on a spectacular show in our night-time skies. We'll just have to wait and see what happens as it approaches and rounds the Sun over the next 8-10 weeks when it should be at its visual peak. spaceweatherarchive.com/2020/04/07/comet-atlas-is-breaking-up/

Maybe, maybe not. Time alone will tell. Unpredictable things, comets.

Bugger. My earlier assertion turned out to be true! If you need anymore predictions, apply here:D
