I have a confession to make.
Never listened to an ELP album and don't know their music at all. Couldn't name a single track. I am prompted to admit this after listening to the track that Slinger posted in the drum thread today.
I thought it was the best thing I have heard in a long time, so I'm going to work my way through the albums in chronological order on Spoti ...
How highly do you guys rate them in the pantheon of rock gods?

They are absolute champions of everything pompous and unnecessary in music. i.e. Prog Rock Gods. "Lucky Man" from their first album is a classic, and the other standout on it, for me anyway, is probably "Take A Pebble". I'll be interested to hear what you think of what is if I remember, their third album, chronologically speaking - their interpretation of "Pictures at an Exhibition" - which was my gateway album as far as classical music was concerned, or at least it's the one that made me investigate it more thoroughly.

Very highly indeed, Jules. There is very little they did that I didn't like. Like Yes (but different sounding), they were heavily influenced by classical music.
The triple live album, although not the best sound, gives you all you need to know about them including the incredible Karn Evil 9 and Tarkus.

When I was growing up listening to 'Prog' was unthinkable.
Now I am happy to separate wheat from chaff!

Tarkus is the only ELP album that I can stand to hear all the way through nowadays.

Tarkus is the only ELP album that I can stand to hear all the way through nowadays. Agreed but the version of Tarkus in the triple live album has a much better battle scene.

Check out the version of Tarkus on this...
[EDIT] Actually, I'm playing this album now, and despite the fact that some of the between-song banter is a bit strained, I'd forgotten how good the music actually is.

ELP was staple fare when I was at school. Most people were playing it amongst the other staple fare at the time (Floyd, Cream, Yes, Jefferson, Dead, Moody Blues, Santana etc). Pictures at an Exhibition was a revelation to many - got loads of people into Moussorgsky. Not sure I can sit down and listen to a full ELP album these days though. May give it a try.

It's totally fresh to me so am 'listening without prejudice'.
More albums saved for the big rig, don't like this kind of music on headphones.
