Very open and spacious - without the idiot-panning (which makes me dizzy) this could be damn good, I suspect.
Any other (more sensible) recordings out there?

It's what happened in the early days of stereo. The creation of a soundstage was little understood so instruments were positioned hard-left or hard-right and stuff was idiot-panned all over the shop.
