Eric Lu is Chinese/American, aged 22 and winner of the 2018 Leeds. I think he is going to be a huge star, hopefully with a long career ahead of him. 'Artistry of that kind is rare in pianists of any age; to find it in a 20-year old is simply astounding,’ The Daily Telegraph.Couldn't agree more, I find his playing in the new Chopin 24 Preludes recording incredibly moving. You are guided through every stage of the human condition with limitless depth and maturity. It's perhaps his playing at speed that astonishes me most in a way; how he manages to wring so much emotion from the music without time to dwell is quite remarkable. But he's not at all flashy in style, his technique and seemingly humble attitude to performance allows the music to flow centre stage first and foremost, and he never draws attention to himself self-indulgently ... When you hear a musician make this profound contact with the music you realise what a truly rare gift he has. Such a full and powerful tone on this recording too, with a breathtaking finale, it's an instant classic for me. I intend to see him perform at the earliest opportunity - I've already booked for his solo recital at the Southbank Centre in October, 'Poetry without borders'. www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/134493-eric-lu-poetry-without-borders-2020
