Hi all, been doing some tube rolling and have used a Gold Lion ECC83 and found this to be nice, and also a Mullard ECC83 M8137 this too was nice, however are there any ECC83s out there that sound even smoother and fuller than the two mentioned.
Thank you.

TAD 12ax7 is impressively 3D and clear and dynamic, I have two in my Primaluna amp.
I don't do smooth, so the TAD may not be to your taste, Andy.

Tubes are such a personal choice but the very best that I have had are 60’s Tungsram with red lettering to denote milltary issue. I have a couple in my phono stage. Rare and quite expensive now though …
Rather like Jerry I'm not into smoothies like Mullards - these are much more dynamic and fuller sounding to my ears.

Brimars and Mazdas may offer variations on the Mullard theme.

Recently had the nod towards General Electric 12AX7WA, stocked by Watford valves. Very good.

What is it for? I've recently taken delivery of an Aqua La Scala DAC and the designer recommended these - www.hotroxuk.com/genalex-gold-lion-12at7-ecc81.html. I think they first used Mullard....I get the feeling this company do do a lot of experimenting to get the best result for their products. Certainly this DAC has blown me away, so I've got 2 sets of matched pair in stock. I leave my DAC on all the time...so I'll be lucky to get a year out of a set!

Different valve, not a substitute for a ecc83/12ax7.

I think ‘fuller’ is a maybe difficult word to define and means different things to different people - the Tungsram are certainly better balanced tubes IMO with greater treble extension. Certainly more neutral, dynamic and ‘realistic’ to my ears but if you prefer a more traditional, warm tube sound I would stick with Mullard / Brimar and the like … When I was buying tubes I always found this guide to be very useful indeed, if you haven’t come across it already; it has masses of useful comparisons. www.audioasylum.com/scripts/d.pl?audio/faq/joes-tubes.html

Just popped the Mullard M8137 back in and have realised what a lovely sounding valve this is.

Yes, can’t go wrong with a nice Mullard. The best I’ve heard are Tungsram Foil Getters, late 50’s - early 60’s with welded plates. Tried a lot of the usual suspects over the years, these are the best.

More lockdown fever ( valve rolling ) this one really took me by surprise.... Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the window position of the Vincent SV-237MK- WOW!
A budget valve that sounds utterly musical and coherent- me likey.
Tube rolling is fun.
Stay safe everyone.

I used Sovteks in a Leak Stereo 20 a lifetime ago. They were impressive then, too.
