I'm trying some streaming options with the Lindemann Musicbook SOURCE (their caps, not mine). The SOURCE works really well, I'm trying to get to the bottom of some streaming quirks which I believe are more to do with Windows. I don't have a NAS, I mainly either play files from a USB attached SSD or I stream from Tidal until the trial ends, then Qobuz or Amazon (when Lindemann complete this option).
I wanted to try DLNA from Windows so I've enabled Windows Media Streaming, it works fine except for two foibles.
1) it plays tracks alphabetically, ignoring the full ID3 tags This looks to be a common complaint and is a show-stopper
2) less important - art is shown against each track but does now show for the whole album
It seems as though Windows doesn't even try to play music as albums, it's simply streaming files with little intelligence. Presumably a proper NAS would be smarter?
Might I have missed a Windows setting somewhere?

I've been doing more research into DLNA track order. It seems it's up to the client to request the sort order. In this case the Lindemann looks to be requesting the ID3 track title which in my cases doesn't have a track number. Of course if I add a track number to the title the order is then correct - but you only expect the ID3 filename to carry the track number, along with the track field.
CDs and records are so much easier! :-)

I use www.mp3tag.de/en/ to write/change my ID3 tags. It's good, it's free (it's actually donation-ware) and updates are pretty regular.

That’s what I use but the ID3 Title shouldn’t need the track number embedded....there’s the Track field for this. I’ll see what Lindemann have to say..
I see I’m far from the first person to have this issue. Is there a view on whether Title should contain the track number? It looks wrong to me. I can batch convert my files if need be.

I always number the tracks in Mp3tag and also add the track-number to the start of the actual file-names. It also pays to remember one's leading zeroes, as I found out when track 11 on a NAXOS album I'd downloaded was following track 1.

I have track numbers on the Filenames but not the Titles. When playing files from USB the same software gets the order right.
Do you have track numbers embedded in the title field as well as the filename? As well as the Track field....

Too much of a faff to post an image...here's the format I have across my library:
Filename: 06 Money.flac Artist: Pink Floyd Title: Money Track: 6
The above works fine from USB on the Lindemann, in my car, Foobar, Jplay, Bughead, HQplayer
Here's what I need for DLNA with the Lindemann:
Filename: 06 Money.flac Artist: Pink Floyd Title: 06 Money Track: 6
So I need the track number in 3 places. Is this to be expected?

I do, because I encountered issues a long time ago using different playback devices and players. I set things up to work in all scenarios, because some things seem read the filename, and others read the metadata.

Chris, you don’t have the track number in the Title field....or is that image showing one that doesn’t work?

The track number is in the box lower down, but otherwise that's it.
I'm wondering if your issue is one of no control software. I see the words Roon ready.
I have my Squeezebox setup beng controlled by LMS run on a RasPi, and all the NAS has to do is serve files however they're requested.

The way Chris has shown there is pretty much the same as I lay things out except I usually fill in the "Discnumber" field and link to the album art.

It works fine from my USB connected SSD on the Lindemann, this is the same app, same software. I think DLNA and USB are treated diffently in the app. Here's my usual format: Here's what I need to make it work: Am I being unreasonable thinking if the first format works in one part of the app that I shouldn't need the second format?

I do use the discnumber thing when it's a multiple disc set. The Lamb Lies Down is one such set, and the album tag is identical (ie no disc1 or disc2 included in the title). Then it's CD 1/2 and CD2/2. That way it just plays as a complete album.

It’ll interesting to know what they say. I’m in close contact with them anyway so I’ll know more next week. They prefer NAS attach, maybe it’s just the DLNA code and it’s rarely used.

It can be a faff and it does need some IT ability. However it’s becoming more typical as the same files reside in our two cars, one of which also required the tagging modifying. Once done it should be fine which is why the current issue is annoying but it’s easily fixable one way or another.

The track order issue I’m having it seems isn’t uncommon with DLNA / UPnP, I’m sure there are ways around it. Certainly when using BubbleUPnP with HQplayer and Jplay they managed to request the correct order of tracks though I think they used SMB files sharing protocol. I’ve tried BubbleUPnP as well as the Lindemann app, behaviour is the same so the sorting request may need to come from the streamer to app.

I found the whole tagging of files issue to be a minefield, and I also used mp3tag which is good. However, playing the same files on two different players resulted in different display information and the danger of out of order playback. It put me off file playing for life.
Streaming is so much better and, apart from Tidal, you usually get the tracks in the right order.

Streaming is so much better and, apart from Tidal, you usually get the tracks in the right order. I think I understand most of the issues now....it is a mess and depends on decisions made by the app provider. What I’ve not worked out yet is the mechanism for the app to request the correct order, not that this will help me. If the app isn’t fixed my only option is to batch convert the Title field for about 1,000 albums. I won’t be the first to do this by any means. Yes it’s a minefield. The same app plays fine via USB because it uses the filename.
