I should close off this topic with the explanation/solution. Lindemann tell me their recommendation is to use a NAS with Twonky server, this presents the correct results - ie tracks in the correct order. Windows doesn't do this and having googled it a fair bit over the weekend this is certainly what many others have found. For the copy of music on my Windows machine I've done a bulk convert using an "Action" in Mp3tag. I created the Action to use the string "$num(%track%,2) %title%". This adds the track number to the title so Windows now presents album with the tracks in the correct order. Albums now look like this in Mp3tag: The above is the one I created manually but I get the exact same result from the bulk "Action" I applied in Mp3tag.

One more update for completeness, for anyone who's not fallen asleep due to the boredom of the topic...
I've installed the Twonky media server, the Windows version. All seems to be working including album art and track ordering with one proviso. For search "by folder" I've had to tick the option in Twonky to use filenames (without extensions) instead on Titles. At least it gives the option. This issue is Windows not understanding media...

Hah! I have Twonky media server on my NAS box, not that I've ever used it. IIRC it's what Linn DS owners used to use.

Twonky started early in video streaming, if I recall correctly? A rival to TVersity.

Twonky seems to still exist but it's not supported as of 2018. I wonder if I'm better playing with Plex. I really didn't want to get into all this.
