Martin's Money tips has a few tipsI seem to have proved one of them I was sceptical about 1. Never auto-renew. Loyalty is expensive. - we probably already know this 2. Don't assume third party is the cheapest 3. Getting insurance 20-26 days ahead is the optimum time and can save £100s This is the one I doubted. Got prices a week or so ago. Now my cheapest renewal is £20 more 4. Got more than one car? Multi-car insurance can sometimes save £100s – even if you’ve different renewal dates 5. Adding a responsible 2nd or 3rd driver can cut costs, eg, your dad or Aunt Dot 6. See if legitimately tweaking your job title could save £100s 7. Beware paying monthly – you're essentially taking an expensive loan 8. You can switch mid-year, so don't automatically wait for renewal 9. Get on the electoral roll – it matters 10. Consider if you need add-ons such as protected no-claims or breakdown cover I was with M&S last year. Renewal £174. Seemed high. Cheapest online was £125 Asked them if they could match. No but they will give me £50 in M&S vouchers. All fine as the boss goes in there regularly. Next year I will be on the case just under a month to go. Will also try the cash back sites for the first time Cheapest I had was with the RAC. Must be good, mustn't it ? Reading reviews said not

1. Always shop around, even if you use a broker 2. Men should have an additional female driver, it brings the price down 3. If you have a modified car, Adrian Flux and Chris Knott are specialists 4. Declare everything, including optional extras bought with the car such as different wheels 5. Use Parkers to assess value for its age, never over-estimate the value as you will not get it but the premiums will go up 6. Never accept the renewal quote without bargaining them down 7. If you use the car to commute to work, make sure it's in the insurance 8. If you belong to a car club or forum, you will often get a discount

Check companies not on the comparison sites
Aviva is a good company and offers excellent prices.
The boss just had her renewal from L&V around £260 Worth looking around. Comparison site down to £190
Check with Aviva. 10% off as already a punter £168

Check windscreen cover
I'm checking if a windscreen replacement affects no claim bonus. Didn't used to ...
Aviva say - Approved Repairer windscreen replacement limit - unlimited - Non approved Repairer windscreen replacement limit - £185 per claim - Windscreen replacement excess - £115 per claim - Windscreen repair excess - £10 per claim (so sort any cracks or chips quick)
If no claim is affected could be better to go direct

My new recommendation: get a dashcam.
Mine was barely two months old when I needed to use it to prove that a dickhead Jaguar driver had moved into my lane, causing me to drive into and scrape the kerb. He was adamant that he had done nothing wrong and was very aggressive when I finally stopped him. He then counter-claimed against me! His passenger had shoved a finger in my face and threatened me. Thoroughly unpleasant thug.
The dashcam proved exactly what I had claimed he had done. Otherwise, the insurance company were entirely disinterested.
Never assume that your insurance company is on your side.

Done less miles during lockdown? You should get around a 2% discount on your current annual premium for every 1000 miles not travelled. No, they won't offer this. You have to bargain it. That's 7745 miles for us!
My broker have been very good at ensuring the best deal for me. Something happened this year though, the opening gambit was £90 more than last year! "We feel this is a competitive quote" Er no, it isn't. I can get as low as last year's premium, like for like elsewhere! No mention of any Covid rebate either. Let's see what happens when I call them in Tuesday. Switching imminent!

I've not really dropped my mileage enough to claim anything. I've been going to work 3-4 days a week through the lockdown as an essential worker. At least I drove my insurer down in premiums this year on my renewal.
