Well, my first selection this month, after its catastrophic start with the usual classical folks, turned out to be a popular subject for discussion. So, in the words of Monty Python ... Antonio Caldara. Baroque composer 1670-1736. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_CaldaraQuite obscure - I would never have come across this album if it wasn't for Tom @montesquiue . He played it at a Bakeoff (Adam Slim's, I think, 'amdismal' formerly of the Wigwam forum) and my jaw just dropped within the first 10 seconds. Quite a lot like this .... Anyway, it's a staggeringly good album with amazing sound quality that cannot be fully appreciated on PC speakers, and if you don't appreciate it then that's your loss. Can be hard to find on the streaming services as they insist on spelling the guy's name as Caldalra, anyway I've got the links for you. tidal.com/browse/album/17845514open.qobuz.com/album/4250128504058

Spelling mistake on Spotify too, Jerry? "Caldalra: Cantate..."?

I only seem to be able to remove the poll, as oppose to edit it!

Extremely well recorded I am not really used to the vocals but think it actually might grow on me

3 tracks in and I'm ready to hit "9" already. And I'm guessing it's a hammered dulcimer.

A great recording but I find the vocal compositions a bit relentless and couldn’t make it all the way through … Also not convinced by the counter-tenor’s vocal quality.
The Violincello Sinfonia and Sonata is much more to my liking, what a beautifully rich and warm timbre and very sensitively played. Especially sublime is the 3rd movement of the Sinfonia, just a shame these works are so short!

It took me completely by surprise, Jerry, and yes, it is wonderful.

Yup, that's a 9. I'm listening to his cello sonatas now.

Sorry - I don't think even we can edit a poll once posted.
I'm listening now (yes, I'm at work) and hammered dulcimer always sounds marvellous. I shall also listen properly tonight before voting. I'd never heard of Caldara so this is completely new to me.

I looked at that and thought, "how the Hell did Jerry post a mirror to the forum?"

I can really enjoy the instrumentation but I still struggle with the vocals.

I think you have to appreciate the vocals in the context of the times they are trying to replicate and the 'Castrati' ...

I do like countertenors but not enamoured with this particular one ...

The recording is wide open and that dulcimer sounds fabulous. Nice music and, yes I agree, the countertenor is no James Bowman, for sure. I'm giving it 7/9 and await reprisals from Jerry

Interesting comments about the vocalist ... no, he's no James Bowman, but I think his style is more appropriate to the music. I enjoy the guy's sound a lot, I think it 'fits' the music. 7/9 ain't too shabby from someone who usually prefers his music to be on a much larger scale.
