When was the last time you listened to an Oboe Concerto? C.P.E. Bach: Oboe Concertos
Xenia Löffler (oboe) Akademie für Alte Musik BerlinWonderfully sprightly and zestful performances all round bring a real freshness to this generous helping of CPE. Ms Löffler plays a modern copy of a period instrument with exquisite tone and timbre. I think the recent Gramophone review sums things up most eloquently - ‘Mingling athletic precision and devil-may-care abandon, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin relish the music’s seething energy and harmonic and dynamic shocks…Löffler is all you could ask in this repertoire, phrasing and colouring with spontaneous flair, bringing a twinkling sense of fun (not a word readily associated with CPE) to the finales and a singing eloquence to the slow movements.”Here is her discography, which I will be exploring further for sure - xenialoeffler.com/en/discography/Try the opening Concerto in E flat Major and if you like it play on!

To answer your question, Jules - yesterday, but they were by J.S. rather than C.P.E. I've only got C.P.E.'s Eb Maj and Bb Maj and I can't help feeling that I should remedy that so, great choice.

Ha - excellent!
I love the sound of an oboe, particularly that of a baroque instrument and the extra depth it brings.
Hope you enjoy it.

You can't beat a nice bit of Baroque 'n' Roll on a Saturday afternoon. Of course, I was getting my sonatas (sonatae?) and my concertos (concerti?) mixed up. C.P.E. only wrote two Oboe Concertos, so it's hardly surprising that I've only got two of them. DOH! Sadly, I'm not going to hear this version on a 'decent' system as Amazon currently want forty-eight quid for it. I can hear enough to know that I like this recording though. Top marks.

It's very pleasant and well played. There isn't much spark for me but no downside either. He is not the giant that his father was, though. 2/3.

Coincidentally, the equivalent Hungaraton recording has been a feature of my playlist for quite a while. They take a more Romantic view with slower pacing and imo more emotive playing - I find Loffler's playing rather detached and straitlaced. Top marks for the music.

Thank you J - I guess the purist in me prefers a more HIP baroque infused, understated sound, but plenty of room to enjoy both approaches!

I reckon MikeMusic should have a listen, as he likes a bit of baroque 'n roll!

Reminded me of bits of New York Rock Ensemble where they use twiddly bits to intro.

Hmm, that sounds intriguing, got an example Mike?
I'm guessing you are referring to the Baroque 'ornamentation'?
