Tool - Fear Inoculum (2019)Apologies for being a little late with this... To my surprise, this was one of my favourite albums of 2019 - Tool's much anticipated fifth studio album, Fear Inoculum. I say 'much anticipated' because thirteen years passed between this and their previous album, '10,000 Days' (which I wasn't so keen on). For those unfamiliar with the band, their music is often described as progressive metal; expect long tracks, big chugging riffs, hypnotic grooves, and interesting time signatures. But the thing which really elevates the music is Danny Carey's mindboggling drumming. The album consists of seven (long) songs and four interludes. The album was presented without the interludes on CD, so I'd consider them skipable. Unusual for this genre, this album is very well recorded - sounds great played loud on a good system. Enjoy! I find this one works as an album in a way that 10,000 Days didn't - takes a few listens to sink in though!

Oh Tool. Now they are a band I know of and have heard a quite a bit of their output and found them to be ok, but nothing I would call special. But will give this a go and see if it can change my mind.

Thanks, Tom. I've heard of Tool but know nothing about them.
I'm having a quick lunchtime listen now.

Thanks to Tom for this, damn this album is good!
Yes the drums kick hard but the guitars rock too … very powerful, with a hint of menace … 4.5/5
I’m getting Tooled up.

Tom - did you want a poll setting up?

I think I can still do that - thought I'd get the main post up first then sort out the poll a little later - give opinions time to percolate.

Anything from this bunch on vinyl?

I believe this album is due to get some sort of deluxe vinyl package sometime soon - if the CD package is anything to go by, then it should be pretty ostentatious. I think they also plan to repress all the previous albums too, possibly this year. The original pressings of those albums that were put out on vinyl go for silly money on discogs (there are lots of bootleg pressings, too). The other album of theirs that I really like - Lateralus - only ever had a picture disc, so I'm hoping that will get a proper repress.

If Syd Barratt had formed Hawkwind, and they'd gone out for a boozy night out with Triumph... "7empest" definitely put me in mind of "Set The controls..." It was a lot more "psych" than I was expecting, not having listened to them before. In fact, it was a lot more musical than I was expecting due to some ill-conceived preconceived ideas. I was expecting tons of thunder and thrash but was pleasantly surprised. I'll definitely check out some of their other releases as time allows. If there was a poll: 8/ 10 or 4/ 5.

There is now a poll! But as per, no numerical ratings

I was hoping for rankings like "the whole toolkit", "a really good set of spanners", a decent screwdriver", "old rusty pliers"...

Jules, you know the drill, no bad puns or we'll have to file an official complaint, unless you pliers with booze of course, in which case it's plane we'll relax the rule just this once.
