DVD-Audio is better than HDCD IMO, but SACD is on a par with DVD-Audio. Like everything it does depend on the device you’re playing them through.

But I don’t know whether that was the player or the discs to be honest.

I always thought it was down to the recording/mastering: the very best SACDs and DVD-As could both sound superb, the worst ones were no better than CDs.

A case in point: the Emerson Lake & Palmer remasterings onto SACD and DVD-A. All a waste of money as they sound pretty awful due to the original recordings.

It's a shame, isn't it? I would love an awesome sounding Brain Salad Surgery but it just ain't good, even in hi-res from Qobuz.

My penny's worth , BluRay-Audio disc has the capability of being better than DVD-Audio as it can store higher rez and better codecs . I have several of both and BluRay sounds better to me. However neither are as good as SACD the BluRay-A are far too clinical and lack body , SACD is the finest format for audiophiles IMO . I play all discs on my OPPO UDP-205 .

I think I may have the Japanese SHM version. I also have Selling England on SACD and that is one of the best SACDs I ever bought.
