I am Malcolm from Alcester, Warwickshire and have had a lifetime since the early 1970's of enjoying my Rotel RX-1603 which is commonly known as "The Monster"...haha I originally purchased my Rotel RX-1203 from John Townrow, owner of Five Ways Hi Fi in Birmingham, along with a J A Michell Focus 1 Turntable with a Mission Arm, which is still in excellent working order.......
Upon visiting the shop again, he then had the RX-1603 in his window as ex-demo for £250 again around 1974 I guess.....so I bought that too....and clearly it was a great purchase.
I have used the both of them with a JVC SEA R-7 Graphic Equalizer, with 4 Wharfdale
Delta 70 speakers, and 4 Wharfdale PRO speakers when used at things like parties and weddings etc, when volume 11 is required.......
Both Receivers work fine, but the RX 1603 has started to have issues with the Mode
switch and one channel is starting to cut out....touch the switch it comes back on, but
clearly the great piece of kit requires attention, so Pink Floyd at volume 11 can be restored again.!!!!
I am not competent in repairs myself, but I am very sure there will be many far more
accomplished members on here who will know the right engineer or repair business who will be capable of this. I live in Warwickshire, so someone close would be good, but if I have to travel then so be it......
I thank you in advance for accepting me on your forum, and for any kind help offered.
kind regards Malcolm

Hi Malcolm and welcome to TAS!
You should be able to restore the mode switch with some contact cleaner if you can get to it inside? Otherwise, we might have a volunteer who lives close to you.

Hi Martin,
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it.....
I am an electrical engineer by trade, but would much rather give the job to someone who knows what they are doing, I have never had the cover off, but have see the insides from pictures, and
I have no idea at all how to carry out the repairs necessary. Maybe it requires a damm good clean and service as well.....I am
63 now and would like another 20 years out the amp if I live that long to enjoy it.!!!
kind regards Malcolm

I still think the problem is most likely dirt or dust on the mode control contacts. If you open the cover and reach to the mode switch with a can of WD40 with the long pipe on the nozzle, and squirt a very small amount into the switch via one of the holes on the side, you may well fix it without any need to dig deeper.
Once the contacts have been squirted, just exercise the switch to one end and back about 10 times with the power off. Contacts are nearly always self-cleaning and this action alone stands a good chance of fixing it.
Time taken 15 mins, cost zero.

Tin of Servisol. Take the knob off. Point the spray tube at the base of the shaft. Squirt. Replace knob. Twist the bezeezus back and forwards out of it for a couple of minutes. Job done.

Servisol is better, but WD40 does the job and can be found in almost every household. Going in through the shaft is inspired, though

Hi Chrisb,
Thank you for your reply, and thans for your advice. I will buy a tin of Servisol which I have located on ebay.
I will give the repair a go, but would still like to find an engineer or repair shop/person close to me if anyone has any ideas??
kind regards Malcolm

I would ask in your nearest HIFI shop if they can recommend someone as they are likely to have someone they trust
