Hi.
Would have rather used Paul Barker as my user name, but a forum engine so up to date and flexible doesn't provide for people who have nothing to hide from. Go figure?
strike that. I found I can edit the display, though the username remains paulbarker you will see Paul Barker.
the valve in my profile is a red spot short path early British Valve.

Hi Paul and welcome to TAS. It's one of the foibles of ProBoards that you cannot have a space in your username, but as you've seen you can have any display name you like.
So you're a valve man? What amps do you use?

Hi all, especially Martin.
funnily enough using a Sugden P51 because it has enough power for me and it resolves voices nicely, such as violin and females who sound sybilant on lesser systems.
Garrard 301, air bearing arm, various cartridges (all mc), step up transformer solid state phono stage at the moment (have built different valve phono stages but none were state of the art)
The speakers wer a prototype which Collin Topps made for himself and sold at cost.
I didn't like them one little bit when I got them home. but that was a lesson in synergy. They needed the better damping of the Sugden amplifier to discover they actually work quite well.
They have a nasty full range Tang Band driver which is nothing like the quality of Lowther or AER, but it is a compromise. I found that the Lowther PM2 bulb shaped phase plug gets rid of the otherwise absolutely unlistenable to upper registers. The phase plug tamed them sufficiently.
Not that I would recommend these drivers to anyone. have heard many drivers which are leagues better.
We can't always have what we want..
Don't have anything digital that sounds anything like good enough to even mention.

So you're a valve man? Understated. My life is surrounded by valves and iron. But non of it is at home in my living room with the rest of the family. When I get time I sometimes bring a sprawling mass and spread it across the floor. When my body is back to full fitness and I can even carry a valve amp. Far better to use the Sugden's, which if you blindfolded me and put me in a blind test with against every valve amp I ever heard would come quite high up the ladder.

Hi Paul and welcome from me. Some interesting approaches to things.
By the way how do you achieve Thermionic Monk status?
Cheers, Alan

By the way since I broke my foot I haven't lifted a finger in valve amp department.
survival is higher on the list of priorities.

A-ha! Couldn't resist the temptation of a new forum?
In all the years i've been reading your output, I never cottoned on to the fact that you had an air-bearing arm. Can't have been paying attention. Yow do you get on with it?

Yes it's alright.
I have been advised I should ditch the carbon fibre wand and try brass.
Brass seems very heavy.
I wandered about using copper.
But lethargy leaves carbon fibre safe and secure where it was planted by Vick it's maker.
I have a Mayware arm and in some ways it may be better than this, but not in every way. This is easier to set up. Tracking wyse at least.
My ultimate to try would be the magnet hanging of fishing wire type. But leathrgy will probably prevail. After all I have got a decent plateaux worth stopping to rest at.
