It looks like something someone rather badly threw together in their garage.

It ain't pretty for sure but if it sounds as good as its rep, I'm interested.

It looks like something someone rather badly threw together in their garage. It may well sound very good, and I am quite broad minded when it comes to appearances, but I'd be embarassed to have anything that crappy looking in my system. There are lots of good preamps out there that don't look like they've been thrown together from a 1950's discard bin. Someone on AOS was making a hell of a fuss about one of these iirc .... then he put it up for sale in the classifieds.

It's raved about on the High End Audio site. This site makes a good read, but the recommended components are very US-centric and I simply can't agree with some of the findings. Highly entertaining, though, and I do believe Salvatore is a genuine person and writes what he hears. www.high-endaudio.com/RC-Linestages.html

Yep - that was one of the reviews in my opening post, young man 😀
I think it has to be worth a go - very rarely available second-hand though!

The Truth is an active preamp with unity gain since the stage is described as a buffer. So you have the drawback of the lack of gain of a passive but the advantage of being able to drive a power amp well. Whether it would work can be tested by trying a passive in your system. If there is enough volume at the highest levels you listen to, then it's a go and should dramatically improve on a passive. If not, you need an active preamp with gain.

Exactly, that's why I want to try one with my new power amp, which is perfectly matched with my passive.

Although not exactly the same of course, doesn't the Chevron Paradox pre work in a similar way? That's another design that interests me.
