After Pinkie's visit when he said he found the effect of the REL with the Quads a bit heavy, I've been having a bit of a play.
The blurb with the REL suggests placing it in or near the corners so it 'drives the room'. Being a good lad who ALWAYS reads instructions (hah... I used throw the instruction to Airfix kits away as it was more fun) this is how I've always used it.
However, yesterday I moved it to midway between the two speakers. Much cleaner and although, in theory, the low frequencies are in mono - I understand - the position of the bass guitar has definitely moved on Take 5 and is more solid. Tried it with various tracks and its definitely better this way.
How do other people use theirs?? Follow instructions or just spend hours buggering around until it sounds best?

Well mine sits in the corner because whatever room it has been in there has been 'stuff' in the way to site it in the middle. Even though its supposedly indistinguishable as to the direction of the bass I do think you get a feeling (better word needed) for the direction.

Mine's to one side of the right hand speaker. I've not experimented much with different placements because a) it's one heavy bastard and b) I'm one lazy bastard

I would have the feeling I failed if I had a sub woofer. Having Isobariks helps, but I confess I have only ever heard one in Martin's old set up some years ago. So this is more emotive than scientific Not trying to be wooferist

I have done without the sub for many years but as I've started listening to quite a bit of organ music lately, felt the need for a bit of low down welly which the Teufels provide but the Quads can't match. The Teufels can't match the Quads anywhere else.

No but there is a string bass, you know, one of dem proper non electrickified acoustic instruments. I mixed me terms guv - sorry. I took the level of the sub down to where I could no longer hear it directly and then a notch more. The levels down there are about the same on both pairs of speakers now.

As Mike said, I used to have a REL Studio II. The best placement for me was just inside the right-hand speaker, against the wall. You can also play with the phase control, as well as the crossover frequency and gain, to get things well integrated.
I sold it when I bought the Ushers.
