Meshuggah - Catch Thirtythree (2005)Released in 2005 by the band Meshuggah from Sweden. From 2006 to 2010 I was a rabid fan of this innovative metal group. But their releases since Obzen (2011) have left me mostly disappointed, although I don't blame the band one bit for taking their sound in another direction. But wow did I have a few good years there with albums None, Nothing, I, Chaosphere, Catch 33. I really got into it and lived my life on the hilarious MeshForum dedicated to discussion of the band and general sillyness. I got into 33 a bit late and didn't really even care for it so much at first. Now I find the repetitive nature of the first 4 tracks nearly hypnotic with the vocalist's rhythms. Certainly an aggressive sounding album but it isn't mindless pummeling imo. BTW this is intended to be a 45 minute long song. If you can tolerate this up to In Death - Is Life/ in Death is Death there is a real treat imo in that second part that just slows down to silence and slowly builds itself back together into some kind slow, undistorted musical piece that sounds beautiful to me. After that point is where the real meat of Catch Thirtythree is with track 'Shed' and everything that follows. Very well recorded and mixed it seems to me. I'd really like to hear this on an end game speaker set up I've not heard it on anything other than soundbars, cheap speakers and fairly good headphones. My son was really into them when he was performing in a thrash metal band. Some of his favourite bands, like Opeth, have some good songs but overall the genre is a trial for me.
Thanks for this, it will force me to re-evaluate and I shall give it a full listen.

A brave choice I have avoided listening to Meshuggah for years I was scared it would be just to heavy for me. However, I do not mind this. I can enjoy the whole outside sound and can even handle the vocals these days. My biggest issue is that it just a bit too repetitive for me I enjoy more variation I think Tom if he is around, will like this/

I added a poll
I gave it a 2 if it was marked of 10 I would have given it a 3, To be honest before listening I thought it would have been a 1. I would have given a higher score if a bit more varied in riffs.

Thanks for putting this forward - at least I know not to spend waste any more time listening to this band.

I'm actually looking forward to it now, after reading the negative responses.

Well, you were positive in your negative opinion of the band I suppose.

Well, you were positive in your negative opinion of the band I suppose. They're allegedly a heavy band, which means there should be some kind of menace and ferocity. They're about as menacing and ferocious as domestic kittens at play.
I saw Deep Purple a little while ago. They're a bunch of pensioners, and yet their performance was breathtaking at times in its ferocity.

I know Meshuggah and have liked the odd track. I’ll give it a go and let you know my thoughts.

Not for me, I'm afraid. I've never been into that style of music and my mind was not changed by Meshuggah.

Totally understandable guys thanks for checking it. Someone mentioned ferocity. Would these tracks from a grittier Meshuggah album fit that description? tidal.com/track/2185370

No, this is just not for me. I studied my emotional centres and nothing lit up at all. I cannot be doing with that vocal style in any band. Sorry! 1/5.

Not for me I am afraid. I tried to find something in it I liked but just didn't manage it. Far too much noise and too little melody or music for my liking.
1/5.

I love my metal but prefer more traditional and less industrial sounding I guess!
