I was originally thinking about doing Jellyfish first album. It's kind of well-done quirky pop. That was until two weeks ago I was listening to a Spotify recommended album that was new to my ears and pretty sure I have not seen any mention here Gazpacho Demon. The band was formed in Oslo in 1996 and their influences lie in progressive rock. Demon was recorded in 2014. Like a lot of good progressive albums, it is a conceptual album. “ The band describe the concept of the album as “based on ‘the mad ramblings left behind by an unknown tenant in an apartment in Prague’. The unknown author claimed to have discovered the source of what he called an evil presence in the world. This presence, ‘The Demon,’ was an actual intelligent will, with no mercy and a desire for evil things to happen. The author wrote as if he had lived for thousands of years stalking this presence, and the manuscript included references to outdated branches of mathematics, pagan religions and an eyewitness account of the bubonic plague.”
Musically it is quite sparse almost like Contemporary Classical music. It also quite emotional and hard to guess where it is heading, but for me, everything ties together well. The band occasionally rock out but it tends to be for brief moments. The album has quite a few beautiful moments and the odd strange moment. For me, this is modern progressive music at it's best. It is challenging at times, brings in many strands of music. It is almost like a film score to some dark noir film. I am not sure what other people will think of Demon but it’s an album that requires a few listens to start to appreciate it. Spotify:Wiki:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon_(album)

Your description makes it hard to not want to give it a listen, John.

Do it give it time as takes a while for the ear to adjust.

Not bad, but not great either. It was good enough to encourage me to seek out more of their stuff at a later date however. Musically it's all over the map and I couldn't really get a handle on the band's "sound," if they actually have a definitive sound that is. The vocalist has an "individual" style, and they often reminded me of someone else, but I could not, for the life of me, think who. 3/5 from me.

I wanted to like this because there were elements of it that were quite good but I found listening to the whole album quite a chore. By the end of it I was actually getting quite annoyed, which was a strange sensation I have to say.
Not for me I am afraid, so I have chosen 'It has a few moments I can enjoy in the album'

Damn, I forgot to play this on the 'big rig' today as I was planning. I need to have another listen. The vocals are no problem for me, after all I like the singing in Alt-J which I know is very Marmite.

I've given this album another play today and updated my score from a four to a five. I think it's excellent and may well be acquiring myself a copy.
