The Jayhawks - Back Roads and Abandoned Motels (2018)
Due to a mix up with the rota, we are going with a management special for this entry. I first came across this band through a music based Facebook site I follow. Loads of people were raving about this group and particularly this album, so I thought I would try it and found it to be just excellent. Not a group I was familiar with previously, they have something about them that really works, all of the instrumentalists are extremely skilled and the songs are superb. Hopefully you all will enjoy this group and album as much as I do. Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_Roads_and_Abandoned_MotelsSpotify:

There are several small piles of CDs sitting near the hifi here. At the top of one of them sits this album. So it can't have been that long since I last played it!
The Jayhawks are one of my favourite bands since I discovered them in about 1995 or '96. When I bought a couple of their albums ('Tomorrow the Green Grass' and 'Hollywood own Hall'), my wife was away on a trip to New York and I spent the week playing them to death. When she heard one of them, she asked, "Why haven't I heard of them? This is brilliant, why aren't this band huge?" or words to that effect.
I have all of their albums and solo albums and have seen them perform a couple of times. I commend this album to the house!

Very promising start. Thanks for the Album Choice, I just hadn't listened to them at all.

I'm giving this a 4/5 as it's very enjoyable and prompts me to explore their catalogue further. Of course, the "not sure I'd buy it" part is meaningless for me as I can stream it any time.
Does Karen Grotberg sing on all their albums?

No, she didn't join until 1993. Her first album with them was 'Hollywood Town Hall'. After that, she's been on all of them except 'Rainy Day Music' (I think).

I've given it a "5" because it exceeds the parameters for a "4" in my book. I'd actually have made it 9/10 because it's not quite perfect, but I do already own it, along with several more of their albums. Great choice, Paul.

Not for me Rather dreary, don't like the male or female vocals. Like a cover of artists from the past

If you don't like The Jayhawks, I can't see you liking The Delines either.

It comes down to the vocals Martin I just can't get into them. With the Delines I am okay with the vocals

That is interesting.
I’m not sure I see the similarities with The Delines, but would probably put Mandolin Orange in the same ball park.

I have tried a few of their other albums and am not getting quite the same draw at the moment. Will keep trying because I think they are worth it.

If you don't like The Jayhawks, I can't see you liking The Delines either. I've got The Imperial in my favourites on Spotty , really like it , as John says it's the singer . As my post above this Jayhawks' album didn't do it for me .

This band continue to surprise me. I have been listening to some of their back catalogue and whilst they are probably overall in one genre, they do like to mix it up a bit.
Really happy I found them!
