As previously threatened, there's more to this August than RVW sym8. (Gustaf) Allan Pettersson (19 September 1911 – 20 June 1980) was a Swedish composer and violist. Today he is considered one of the most important Swedish composers of the 20th century.[2] His symphonies developed a devoted international following, starting in the final decade of his life. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_PetterssonHe had a very difficult life, raised in poverty with a violent drunken father. His genius as a composer was pretty much widely unrecognised until he was in his 60s. He was increasigly crippled by arthritis from his early 40s. Anyway, for me the entry point for his music is the 7th symphony. Not an easy listen, but very worthwhile perservering imo! There's a central quite long section, slow and very impassioned in a low key kind of way, that I would rate as some of the most wonderful music I know! So, over to you!

New to me - I do like BIS recordings so hopefully sounds pretty decent too!

I found it on Qobuz and am listening now. The opening to the 7th is very good.

With a subtle change of idiom, this could be Shostakovich. He imparts a similar feeling of the hopelessness of war (I know it was written in the 1960s, but I just have to believe it's about war or its aftermath) and expresses emotions of despair that I hear so often in Shostakovich's music.
For that alone, he has my attention. I've enjoyed this (if that is the right expression) and it deserves 8/9.

A soundtrack in search of a really good black & white film. Written in the sixties but it could have come from the thirties or forties. I quite enjoyed that, Jerry.

Well, I have been listening on my mobile phone - not the last word in hi-fidelity perhaps, but am enjoying it. An incendiary mix of Shostakovich and Jerry Goldsmith's Planet of the Apes 😁 I will certainly look forward to unleashing this on the 'big rig' ...

Are you really surprised, Jerry? It's right up my street.

Yep, surprised. Although my expectation was probably influenced by a wider experience of Pettersson's music - I would have said that the 7th sym was his most accessible piece. But maybe I'm wrong about that, too!

Yup, enjoying this. On my second play now - had to turn it up a bit for those drums!
